What I read this year ☝️

I haven’t finished a book since October… But it’s all good bc I discovered some great new (to me) authors and read a few bangers this year (including way more books about sailing than I anticipated)

Best book was John Krakauer’s Into Thin Air — a breathtaking account the 1996 Everest disaster. So good it sent on a six-month adventure/survival narrative non-fiction binge. Read it if you haven’t already. You won’t be disappointed

Also gotta shout out Sebastian Junger. Never read him before but got hooked after finding A Death In Belmont in my local Oxfam

It’s a fine book, but if you only read one of his works, go for The Perfect Storm. The writing and tale-telling is sublime and he deftly handles a major challenge—how to tell the story of a ship that sank with no survivors—to paint a profound, vivid picture of the lives of professional seafarers (and those unfortunate enough to fall in love with them)

Writing this makes me want to reread it… and it’s probably better than Into Thin Air now I think about it. So perhaps that’s my true book of the year

My 2025 to-read list currently looks a little light, so if you have any narrative non-fiction recs, pls post em in the comments 👇

The Ruddington Heritage Transport Centre is always a fun place to visit. The sights, sounds, and smells are like stepping back in time, and riding on the miniature steam engines (not pictured) always hits the spot with adults and kids alike
