➡️ A Common Ground

Across South Asia, some of the most authentic and quietly radical design is happening at the margins of the profession: in studios working with displaced communities, in student theses that take gender and labour seriously as design questions, and in collectives building in disaster-prone zones. This talk discusses the role of design and architecture in shaping positive social impact across the region. Can architecture and design be practices of collective care rather than individual authorship?

Free and open to all. RSVP on the BIC website. by @eatdosa

Design United is delighted to invite Ar Jayesh Ganesh as a co-curator of A Common Ground edition 1. Jayesh’s own work with the rural schools and agrarian centres across several small villages in the north east of India closely resonates with the intention of A Common Ground . Jayesh co-founded UCS Architecture with his friend Uday Goswami where they explore the intersection of architecture, community engagement and social impact.

Working closely with underserved and marginalised communities across India, they believe in an approach to architecture rooted in listening, learning, and collaboration. Through UCS Architecture, they continue to create meaningful spaces and processes that empower communities and amplify voices often left unheard.

At Design United, we celebrate individuals who challenge conventional perspectives and use design as a tool for inclusivity, dialogue, and collective change.

Join us at A Common Ground! Be part of a space where ideas meet, perspectives converge, and conversations shape the future of design.

Come engage with inspiring minds, explore diverse approaches to architecture, and discover the power of design in bringing communities together.

SAADHYA SPECIAL SCHOOL
An exploration of dignified living environments for children with special needs.

At Saadhya Special School, the terracotta jaali was conceived as more than a decorative facade. It works as a layer between the inside and outside, filtering sunlight, allowing air to move through, creating privacy, and maintaining a visual connection with the landscape.

The section reveals this idea clearly: air moves through the porous facade while daylight is softened before entering the classrooms and hostel rooms. The jaali also creates a gentler edge to spaces that need both openness and a sense of protection. Made from modular terracotta elements, the facade brings together a simple set of needs such as shade, ventilation, privacy and visual connection into one architectural system.

For a school designed around dignity and care, the facade becomes less about making an image and more about shaping an everyday environment.

THE TERRACES
An exploration of architecture as a way to experience the Horizon.

We loved working on this concept proposal for a social institution in Pune. The site occupies a distinct significance in the geography and history of the city.

Rising above the canopy of the large trees, the building has the potential for sweeping views of the Hanuman Tekdi hills to the northwest, the Mula Mutha River to the south. The form and elevation respond in a simple, yet significant way to this charged context. Wrap-around terraces on every floor link the functions on the inside with the landscape outside.

Pune’s weather and tree cover made the decision easy to commit to. These are terraces for a cup of tea at the end of the day, with the hills or the river doing the rest.

Location: Pune
Area: Approx. 30,000 Sq.Ft. (Approx)
Status: Proposal

THE HAMLET HOUSE
Reimagining grandeur as a collection of intimate places.

How do you make a large home feel intimate, without taking away from the grandeur?

For us, the process of discovery began with an inherited, Vastu compliant plan. The trouble was, that the client was unable to arrive at a satisfactory three-dimensional resolution.

Rather than reading the house as one large composition, we began to imagine it as an intimate hamlet, organised around a central street. The spaces then became a collection of public, semi-public and private rooms, connected through courtyards.

Walls, windows and jaalis were then used to frame views, create thresholds and bring the surrounding landscape into the experience of the home.

URBAN CROSSROAD
Imagining Urban Destinations for India’s Emerging Cities

We were initially asked to test the feasibility of a mixed-use development on an industrial site. We began working on this proposal primarily through the programme. However, the process revealed larger urban and architectural opportunities.

The challenge was not simply fitting more built area into the site. It was making multiple programmes, operators and sale components work together. Once that began to resolve, the feasibility study started becoming an architectural proposition with a strong urban value proposition for the city.

For us, that is where a feasibility exercise becomes interesting. Not just in knowing what can fit, but in recognising what the project could become.

OFFICE ON THE LAKE
Bringing nature into the industrial workplace.

Would you realise from these images that this office is inside a steel plant?

Here, the workplace is being shaped around a simple idea: that work need not be confined to work.

Circulation, pause, contemplation and landscape become part of the everyday experience, creating moments to step out, look around and reconnect.

The building is still taking shape. But the idea is beginning to become tangible.

PLANT-OFFICE IN CHAKAN
Reconsidering the Industrial Plant Office

We were asked to design the interiors of an office building in the industrial district of Chakan, Pune.

When we first visited the site, we found a fairly mundane industrial box. Conventional square windows, little relationship with the interiors, and no real identity.

But the building had one interesting quality. It was clearly visible from the main road, about 300 metres away and 20 metres higher.

So we asked ourselves: 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐛𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞?

The answer was a new elevation. A simple composition of windows, a porch and a strong northwest corner, with a rhythm and precision that felt right for an engineering company.

What started as an interiors project became an opportunity to rethink the building itself.

We like looking for these hidden clues. Sometimes they can help turn an ordinary building into something that makes a statement.

A proposal for temporary urban activation through adaptive reuse and modular design.

Can temporary architecture create lasting places? The most sustainable buildings may be those that can adapt, relocate and evolve. Exploring how circularity and modularity can create meaningful places with fewer resources.
