Pasties in Exeter! 🇬🇧

Never mind cream first or jam first... the real Westcountry controversy is pasties.

I know this will have the Cornish purists reaching for their pitchforks, but I'm firmly in the Ivor Dewdney camp. They only have one Exeter shop left these days, so when I found myself nearby yesterday, I couldn't resist picking up a couple.

Fresh from the oven when I bought them. Unfortunately, the 20-minute drive home turned the crisp pastry into a slightly softer affair thanks to a bit of sweating in the bag.

No complaints from me though. They still disappeared remarkably quickly.

Breakfast on Pilgrimage Street, London SE1 🇬🇧

As part of my mission to keep trying new cafés, Google Maps led me to Workman's Cafe this morning.

I went for the Workman Special, swapping the chips for bubble. It came with two rounds of toast and a tea for £15.

The bubble was decent enough, but the infamous tubes of woe sausages (thanks @fryuppolice 😂), eggs with firm yokes, and a bowl of beans randomly dumped on my toast plate knocked a few points off for me.

Nothing terrible, just a few things that stopped it being a standout breakfast.

6/10.

Breakfast in Redcross Way, London 🇬🇧

Hopefully we'll get the project wrapped up this week, which means this should be my last week in London for a while.

Another first for me this morning with a visit to Britannia Cafe, and sat outside in the sunshine.

I went for the brunch, which came with tea and a round of toast, and added bubble and black pudding on the side.

The black pudding was spot on – crispy on the outside and soft in the middle, just how I like it. The bubble was really good too and tasted pretty similar to the one I make at home. The Cumberland-style sausages were tasty as well.

Overall, a decent breakfast and not bad value at £16.95.

Pie and mash on Tower Bridge Road, London! 🇬🇧

Doesn't get much more British than this. @manzespieandmash is the oldest surviving pie and eel shop in London and still going strong.

The queue was a mix of tourists eating in and locals grabbing takeaways, which shows there's still plenty of love for a proper pie and mash.

I went for a double-double – 2 pies, 2 mash, liquor, loads of chilli vinegar and plenty of pepper. Perfect fuel before a night shift.

We also got a side of jellied eels to share. Every time I order them, I convince myself I like them... and every time I'm reminded that I really don't 😅

Had to finish with a jam sponge and custard to get rid of the eel taste!

Breakfast in Kennington Lane, London 🇬🇧

Bit of a trek from the hotel for this one, but it was definitely worth it — another proper greasy spoon.

I went for the Kennington Special with a side of fried slice. When the owner (I’m guessing) brought the food over, he asked why I didn’t have any tomatoes. I mentioned they weren’t on the menu and, before I could finish my sentence, he’d disappeared into the kitchen and returned with a lonely tinned tomato.

The black pudding and bubble were exactly how I like them — crispy on the outside, soft in the middle. Good bacon, a tasty Cumberland style sausage and well buttered toast.

I even got a little pud!

A cracking effort all round, and a bargain for £14.89 - 8.75 / 10!

Food market, Elephant & Castle, London! 🇬🇧

Still pretty full after a big breakfast, but I needrd something before our night shift.

We stopped by @mercatometropolitano, which has loads of independent food vendors serving dishes from all over the world.

Last night I opted for Italian and went for a delicious beef shin ragù, with a pizza chaser... although I have to admit, I didn't manage to finish all the pizza! 🍕🇮🇹

The food was excellent, the atmosphere was great, and it was surprisingly good value for London.

Breakfast in London! 🇬🇧

Back in London for another week, which means it's time to try a few new caffs.

A search for "greasy spoon near me" led me to @cafehouserestaurant

A very decent breakfast overall. Unfortunately, there was no bubble and squeak on the menu, but the hash browns were nicely crispy. The sausage looked a bit budget at first glance but was actually pretty good. The beans were well stewed, and the mushrooms were deep-fried — which, to be fair, I don't mind at all.

A solid 7.5/10 from me! ⭐️

Fry-day in Ottery! 🇬🇧

It's been a busy couple of weeks since getting back from Canada, and the bacon and enormous black pudding just haven't quite scratched the itch for a proper full English.

A phone call from my mate and, 10 minutes later, 3 of us were heading up the hill, knowing that @coldharbourfieldkitchen would satisfy that craving.

A cracking breakfast, as always, with fantastic views.

If you haven't tried it, you should. It's absolutely spot on! 🍳🥓☕

Carvery in Sidbury! 🇬🇧

It seems everyone else was at the @thebeefyboys launch in Exeter last night... I wasn't 😢

Instead, I met up with an old mate for a cheeky midweek carvery at @hare_and_hounds_sidbury.

Hidden beneath that mountain of spuds and veg was turkey, beef, pork and gammon. As if that wasn't enough, I somehow found room for a hot chocolate cake with clotted cream too! 🤤

Fantastic as always.

🍔 @thebeefyboys Exeter 🇬🇧

After following these guys for years, owning both cookbooks, and recreating plenty of their recipes at home, I finally got to try the real thing now they've landed in Exeter.

This was a soft launch, so a few early teething issues were expected. We received a really warm welcome and were quickly moved to a larger booth after a request, which was appreciated given the amount of food we ordered!

A few items were unavailable on the night, including wings, poutine and mac balls, but the team kindly brought us some mac patties to try instead, and they were excellent.

Service delays were handled brilliantly with a complimentary round of drinks, and honestly, it gave us more time to catch up with friends.

I went for the Dirty Boy with chilli loaded fries and buffalo chicken tenders. The burger was superb. The fries were the only disappointment as they were a little too salty for my taste, but the chilli itself was great. The tenders were tasty too, although I'd have liked a bit more kick from the buffalo sauce.

Overall, a really enjoyable evening and everyone else loved their food. Special mention to Mrs H for saying my homemade Beanie Boy tastes pretty similar to the original! 😎

Great to finally visit, and I even spotted Murph making the rounds.

Burgers and wings! 🇨🇦

Well... I went back....

After my first visit, I had to know whether it was genuinely that good or whether I'd just caught them on a great night.

Happy to report it wasn't a fluke!

Second visit and the smash burger was every bit as incredible as I remembered. Those paper-thin patties smashed until they're ridiculously crispy are unlike anything I've had before, and the balance of cheese, sauce and pickles is absolutely spot on.

This time I skipped the fries and Oreo milkshake and went straight for what brought me back in the first place... the burger and wings. The wings were just as impressive as before, and you can really tell the care and effort that goes into their preparation.

What stands out most is the consistency. Anyone can serve one great meal, but delivering the same quality twice in the same week is what separates a good restaurant from a great one.

With so many places to try in Victoria, I've chosen to eat here twice in six days. I think that tells you everything you need to know.
