EYW’s food tour is in @nytimestravel!

I’m so honored our Jackson Heights food tour is considered an “essential” NYC thing to do. What?!

Never would have guessed we’d land here after starting to run these tours for friends back in 2010, 2011. Or from well before that, when my no. 1 goal was to get a byline in this same section as a travel writer (and I did, a few times!).

It feels like a full-circle moment in a way, and I’m grateful I can run these tours just blocks from my home, support the local restaurants and street vendors I love, give back to my community regularly, and meet interesting people from around the world. And continue to write about food + travel, near and far, AND be around for my kids. ✨

➡️ Tours run several times a week based on demand (and guest minimums). There are not many tours open for August, however, as it’s historically a slow month for these and therefore a travel month for me. The fall is open for booking though (and a great time to do this)!

GIFT CERTIFICATES AVAILABLE FOR OUR POPULAR JACKSON HEIGHTS FOOD TOUR! 🎁

Direct link in bio ⬆️

Eat Your World offers weekend, weekday, and weeknight “around the world” food tours of Jackson Heights, rain or shine, year-round. It’s the only tour we run (for 13+ years now), in the neighborhood we love and have called home for 17 years, in the borough I regularly write about. This tour has nearly 150 5-star Google reviews and has been featured in @wsj, @gothamist, @startribune, @ny1 and more. ✨

When you purchase a tour from us, you are not only
gifting a one-of-a-kind culinary experience in NYC (that makes many efforts to run sustainably with compostable materials!)—you are also supporting our small business and all the small local food businesses we in turn support, AND you’re contributing to our monthly donation (5% of tour profits) to local food pantries (@lionsharefoodpantry, @lovewinsnyc), immigrant-rights orgs (like @maketheroadny), food relief nonprofits (@qns_together), and other great local causes (@streetvendorproject, @commonpointny, and more) that need our support now more than ever. 💪

And we DO have a good time! 🎵

DM with any questions!

TIBETAN FOOD IS NOT JUST MOMOS 🥟

It also isn’t Chinese food, nor Nepali nor Indian food. You’ll see some influence and crossover, naturally, but Tibetan cuisine uniquely evolved to sustain life at high elevation. Everyone knows the momo (in large part locally because of @momocrawl!), but those delicious dumplings are only the beginning.

All content is drawn from last week’s @qns_together’s Eats in Queens newsletter (see the bio link for full article), which was inspired by the closing remarks made by @sft_international reps during this year’s Momo Crawl. We hope it inspires more curious eaters to visit our local Tibetan eateries, as this supports the diaspora and perhaps encourages more questions about/understanding of the ongoing struggle of Tibet + Tibetans around the globe.

This post is organized as a dish guide—what the food is and where you can find it. In many cases, several restaurants will carry the same items, so you can’t go wrong trying any of the restaurants mentioned. As usual, we’re spoiled for choice here in Queens!

*This list isn’t exhaustive! The article includes a few more; IG limits to 20 slides.

Spots mentioned:

• @phayulrestaraunt (37-65 74th St.) and @phayulhimalayan2jh (37-59 74th St.), Jackson Heights
• @omwok2022 (multiple locations in JH/Elmhurst + Astoria, incl 78-14 Roosevelt Ave.)

Queens loves its pizza: the New York classic, the Neapolitan, the sourdough, the grandma, and everything in between. But this being the World’s Borough, we also have other styles of pizza from around the globe. Today, we feature three of them.

ECUADORIAN FOOD WE LOVE IN QUEENS 🇪🇨

Ecuador may be out of the World Cup now, but the country’s cuisine is very, very good and, in our opinion, doesn’t get enough props. So last week’s @qns_together Eats in Queens newsletter was all about where to eat great Ecuadorian food in the World’s Borough (see the link in bio for full article).

Fortunately Queens is rich in Ecuadorian food that’s both from the coast (heavy on fish and seafood, peanuts, green plantains, coconut) and the highlands (think pork, corn, potatoes). Not only that, but there’s plenty of choice in setting, from restaurants to street
vendors and bakeries. Here are some places we love.

Featured here:
📍Mini Picanteria El Guayaquileño, 80th St at Roosevelt Ave (one of two trucks associated with @elguayaquilenorestaurant)
📍Sabor Ecuatoriano Bakery, 42-40 82nd St.
📍 @elencebolladodevictor No. 5, 79-09 Roosevelt Ave.
📍 @myleticias, 40-32 National St.
📍 La Esquina de la Caserita, Warren St. at Roosevelt Ave.
📍 @lechon_hornado_ecuatoriano (76-18 Roosevelt Ave.); @barzolaqueens (92-12 37th Ave. + others); @floribellarestaurant (45-12 43rd Ave.); @rinconmelanianyc (35-19 Queens Blvd)

Follow @eatyourworld and @qns_together for more stories like this! And be sure to subscribe to the Eats in Queens newsletter (link in bio). ⬆️

DELICIOUS SANDWICH ALERT! 🥪

We’re on a bit of a sandwich kick this summer, and why not? They’re endlessly creative, delicious, and perfect summer eats. But some of them are more than that, like the inspired, thoughtfully made creations at @sosassandwichshop, where every sandwich has a story behind it (and also gets built on different types of house-made bread, incredibly).

📍EDIT/UPDATE: Sosa’s is no longer at Sala! Follow @sosassandwichshop to see where he lands next.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Eddie Sosa, and trying several of his 11 sandwiches, for a recent dispatch of Eats in Queens (link in bio). His passion is contagious, his stories are engaging, and the sandwiches are excellent. But Eddie hopes his customers connect the dots between his food and humanity itself. Get here before this place gets overrun!

A moment of appreciation for the jhal muri at @fuskahouse_nyc … a literal mound of spicy, crunchy delicious things—puffed rice, chanachur, lentils, onions, peanuts—plus slivered cucumbers and a whole lot of cilantro. All of it cut with bright and bracing lemon juice and mustard oil. It is so good. 😋

TOMORROW (JUNE 6) IS ELMHURST DAY!

Which means a roster of free cultural events (1pm-5pm) and tons of food available for purchase that celebrates the incredible diversity of this dynamic neighborhood. Elmhurst Day is brought to you by @nextstopelmhurst, @qns_together’s merchant organizing program with NYC Small Business Services. Here’s the schedule of free events; swipe above to learn more about the FOOD that will be available.

1pm: Check out the @nyindonesianfoodbazaar at St. James Church, which will run 11am-6pm on Saturday. Lots of food for purchase + Indonesian and Burmese dance performances.

2:15pm: Tibetan Sengye dancers will perform the Snow Lion Dance on Woodside Ave, in front of Frank D. O’Connor Playground.

2:30pm: Stick around for a unique “Blessing of the Wheels and Heels” (bring your bikes, scooters, skates, running shoes!), with clergy from local temples, churches + mosques.

3pm: Elected officials will speak about Elmhurst.

4pm: Balinese dance performance at Moore Homestead Park + more Indonesian food at the IGA Food Bazaar (running 11am-5pm).

Throughout the day you can pop into the Sherpa Buddhist monastery on 75th St. + the Thai temple on 46th Ave. Now for the FOOD.

Around 30 Elmhurst spots will be offering special featured dishes for purchase this Saturday. For some places it’s a new item; for others it’s a signature dish. Some restaurants are offering small grab-and-go portions with a special price for Elmhurst Day. It’s up to you where to go, but there’s tons of info (including curated walking maps) on the Elmhurst Day website; see link in bio. There will also be volunteer guides (including ME!) roaming the area to help out.

The slideshow above is just a small sampling of what you might try on Saturday. Our advice: Show up hungry + curious with some cash to spend in the independent eateries that make this neighborhood so special.

For anyone who wishes they knew the neighborhood better, for anyone intrigued by the amazing press Elmhurst has received of late–here’s your chance to easily dive into the neighborhood’s treasures in the span of just a few hours.

Can’t wait to see you on Saturday. Tag a friend you want to go with! taken in Elmhurst, Queens by @eatyourworld
