An ode to opulence, bottled by Argos.

It’s funny how some fragrances find their way back to you.
My husband’s friend had mentioned Triumph of Bacchus to him a few years ago - a fleeting conversation we tucked away and forgot about. Until recently, when he asked me to finally order it.
The moment we unboxed it, everything stopped for a second - the opulent gold, the weight of the bottle, the air thick with warmth and promise. And then the scent... rich tobacco and creamy rum wrapped in ambered sweetness, a melody of indulgence and refinement.

My husband rarely ever purchases travel sized perfumes.

But after picking up the Clive Christian traveller set, he took Town & Country on an interstate trip and somehow managed to demolish the entire 10ml in a single weekend. By the time he got home, he was already talking about it like an old favourite.

The problem? Loving a fragrance and justifying a full bottle of Clive Christian are two very different conversations.

Then, around the same time, we stumbled across Lattafa’s Emeer.

One spray was all it took.

The resemblance caught us completely off guard. Close enough to instantly transport him back to the scent he couldn’t stop thinking about, yet with enough of its own personality to stand on its own.

Now, my husband can be a bit of a perfume snob when it comes to fragrances he truly loves, so I fully expected him to dismiss it.

Instead, on our very next visit to @privateblends , he walked straight over and picked up a bottle.

Imagine the freshness of a luxury hotel lobby overlooking a manicured estate.
Emeer opens with bright citrus and crisp juniper, giving it a clean, sparkling quality that feels instantly uplifting.
As it settles, a smooth white tea note emerges, bringing a soft, airy elegance that’s neither soapy nor overly green.
The heart is wrapped in creamy sandalwood and a touch of aromatic cardamom, while subtle incense adds a refined, almost polished sophistication.
In the dry down, amber, cedar and patchouli create a warm woody trail that feels expensive, effortless and incredibly wearable. Fresh without being aquatic, woody without being heavy, and elegant without being formal.

✨ Which amber scent rules your collection?

My husband’s perfume connoisseur friend had first mentioned Panadora’s Grand Musk, and it instantly piqued his curiosity. When we stopped by @oligarchaustralia , he was determined to try it - but fate had other plans. Grand Musk wasn’t available to try in store that day, and as he scanned the shelves, Majestic Amber caught his eye instead.

One spritz was all it took. That golden, resinous warmth lingered long after we left the boutique - and just like that, a new love story began. Not just with the scent itself, but with the entire house of Panadora.

I used to think my mum’s perfume smelled like a powder room.

Shalimar was everywhere growing up — heavy, powdery, a scent I associated with a generation, not a mood. I told myself I’d never wear it.

Then I tried Shalimar L’Essence. Same DNA, none of the dust. Bergamot up top, iris through the middle, vanilla and amber holding it down - but sharper, drier, more woman-in-a-room-you-notice than woman-in-a-room-that-smells-nice.

Turns out I didn’t dislike Shalimar. I just hadn’t met the version of it that was actually for me.

Another blind buy.

I’m beginning to think I enjoy the thrill of buying a fragrance I’ve never smelled almost as much as wearing it. 🫣

Thankfully, this one was another success.

Blessed Baraka felt instantly familiar in the best possible way. Warm, resinous, softly ambery… the kind of fragrance that wraps itself around you like your favourite knit on the first truly cold day of the year.

It reminds me of so many of the scents I naturally gravitate towards once the temperature drops. Rich without being heavy, comforting without being overly sweet, and quietly addictive.

Maybe I should stop blind buying…

…but then again, they’ve been treating me rather well lately.

Initio Blessed Baraka opens dark and doesn’t apologize for it - amber and sandalwood hit first, warm and resinous, like walking into a room that’s already been lived in.

Underneath, there’s a musk that sits close to skin - not clean, not soapy, just warm and slightly animalic.

Vanilla comes through thick and a little smoky, more incense than dessert - this isn’t the vanilla from your coffee order. White flowers weave through the base, soft but not sweet, keeping the whole thing from tipping into heavy.

It smells expensive in the way things smell expensive when they’re not trying to - resinous, skin-warm, a little smoky, unmistakably niche.

Oud Orange Intense opens sweet - coconut and fruit right away, almost like a dessert. The vanilla in the middle is Bourbon vanilla specifically, which gives it a rounder, boozier sweetness than plain vanilla. The base is where the oud shows up, alongside musk, but it’s a supporting note here, not the star - it adds depth and a bit of woodiness rather than taking over.

Overall it’s a beautiful gourmand fragrance that happens to have oud in it, rather than a classic oud-forward scent.

There’s something about coffee that always seems to find us.

Not intentionally. We never set out looking for it. Yet somehow, time and time again, we fall in love with a fragrance… only to glance at the note breakdown afterwards and smile.

Coffee.

Perhaps it’s because it has a way of making a fragrance feel lived in. It adds warmth without being predictable, depth without becoming heavy, and a quiet richness that wraps around you like your favourite knit on a cold morning.

Sometimes it’s smooth and comforting. Sometimes it leans dark, smoky and undeniably sensual. Other times it simply lingers in the background, adding an irresistible warmth you can’t quite put your finger on.

Whatever form it takes, coffee seems to be the thread running through so many of our favourite bottles.

Maybe some people chase rose, vanilla or oud.

As for us…

Apparently, we’ve been chasing coffee all along.

Some places are just dangerous for perfume lovers… and Fordgate Pharmacy is one of them.

Yesterday, I wandered in with two of my perfume besties, fully convinced we were “just having a look.” Famous last words.

Between their ever-growing fragrance walls, the incredible prices, and the thrill of spotting something new every few steps, walking out empty-handed simply isn’t an option. Every visit somehow feels like a treasure hunt where everyone’s a winner.

This time, it was Khadlaj’s Vanille Blanc that stole my attention. One spray was all it took, and before I knew it, it had found its way into my shopping bag.

Some perfume purchases are planned.
Others are simply the inevitable outcome of a trip to Fordgate Pharmacy.

Khadlaj Sawaar Vanille Blanc is powdered sugar and apple over vanilla up top, cashmere and white florals through the heart, sandalwood and benzoin holding it down at the base. Gourmand without going saccharine, this reads more like a woody vanilla with a sugared edge than a dessert.
