My best friend Amy died on February 19th, 2024. If you know me, you know how much I love talking about Amy Li and I’d like to share a version of the speech I gave at her memorial.

When I was seventeen, I created a list to look at when I was feeling down: “Things I could cry over how much I love them.” Between “Metro North interior design” and “My Baby Wants a Baby by St Vincent,” I wrote “Amy Li locks the door behind her when she leaves my house.” Amy was my sister. From the first time she slept over for my 13th birthday, she became a regular presence at my house, and my family’s go-to catsitter.

Amy was endlessly curious. She liked to say she was thinking of getting an MFA for fun, maybe in painting or illustration. In the time I knew her, she was a pianist, cellist, guitarist, singer, rapper, soccer player, fencer, debater, painter, muralist, news anchor, filmmaker, engineer, photographer, and the list goes on. Those who knew Amy through these activities loved her sharp mind, enthusiastic spirit, and instinct to make everyone feel welcome. Lately, she was playing Good Days by SZA on the piano, volunteering software work for a non-profit, painting monochromatic oil pieces, and as always, making playlists—take a look at amyy44 on Spotify.

And Amy was a friend. A damn good one. Through all the changes over the past nine years, we continued to share every silly detail of our days. I often feel I’m compatible with a friend when it seems we can talk without running out of topics to discuss. And Amy and I never did. We switched to texting on Snapchat because our iMessage history was taking up too much phone storage. We had a never-ending list of inside jokes, sourced from our random mutual acquaintances, pubescent fumblings, debate packet topics, whatever Betty and Jonah were up to lately… When I went to sleepaway camp, she printed out tumblr memes and sent them to me alongside her letters so I stayed up to date.

Living without Amy is my least favorite thing I’ve ever done. But I am lucky to be surrounded by supportive family and friends. And sometimes when I close my eyes, I can feel her head on my shoulder, like we’re in the back of my mom’s car, driving home. by @eb.bl

Wong Side of Time closed last weekend and my heart is so full admiring what this company accomplished in two short months. What a group of inspired, skilled, and thoughtful artists I have been blessed to work with! Scarlett, telling new queer stories with you never gets old. I still can’t believe we’ve closed yet it all happened so fast. Part of me wishes it could go on forever. This cast, this crew, this team, and @chaintheatrenyc —they believed in this story’s unique voice, its quirky humor, its raw honesty, and its very frequent use of the word “finger”;)They brought it to life in ways that exceeded anything I could have imagined.
