This Earth Day, I’m feeling grateful to live in Aotearoa New Zealand, which still has not only a strong indigenous presence, but meaningful partnerships with iwi (tribes) to take care of the land. As one of the last places on Earth to be colonized by Western powers, there is still a lot of traditional knowledge in our communities.

In this spirit, I am highlighting Ebaa’s latest artwork about the ancestral roots of many Palestinians. The Canaanites are well acknowledged as ancient Semitic peoples in the area, who likely blended with the “Sea Peoples” recorded as “Peleset,” who inspired the name of the land.

There are many forms of “land back” movements around the world, most of which are simply a call to let indigenous people care for the land again. No one can truly own the earth, but if we take care of our mother and each other, she will take care of us.

My friend, Ebaa, is a phenomenal graphic artist in G@za. Her work captures the powerful resilience and beauty of the P@lestinian spirit. We’ve put some of her designs in an online shop as a potential revenue stream so she can support her family. Food prices are astronomically high and her area is constantly under bombardment. Her younger sister has epilepsy and medication is scarce. Please consider buying some art and supporting her family!

We have totes and prints, and are looking to create more items! The shop link ebaa-art.printful.me is easily clickable in my bio ❤️

If you’ve ever considered getting your portrait drawn, @ebaa.gaza does an incredible job! She is so talented and drew this with her fingers! She is a digital artist but does not have a pen for her tablet and has to be creative. Not only is this such a beautiful drawing, but Ebaa captured every detail! My necklace, my piercings, the threads of my keffiyeh! Please consider reaching out to Ebaa and getting your own portrait! She also has her shop through @art.of.raqs where you can purchase art she has already created. by @ebaa.gaza
