The One Where She Turned Forty (not fourty even though 4 is four and 14 is fourteen…make it make sense)

the most glamorous thing about this “milestone” birthday was the two inch high puff shoulders on my shirt, perhaps an unintentional nod to the decade of my birth. and it was all I wanted, good food with my love, and wet kisses from my dog.

last weekend I stood in a room of 200 people celebrating the life of a neighbor I barely knew, whose body had failed her too soon. she was my age. friends and neighbors quickly raised her husband’s salary so he could be home with her and their kids during her last few months. the reality of life is that it must end, but how unfair its timing can be. I stood in the back admiring the years she spent cultivating these relationships with the days she was given and thought - I hope I live in a way that impacts that many people, to love and be loved, to care deeply and be cared for, to understand the value of community and relationships.

the first forty years have been good to me in all the ways that matter - privileged, supported, fought for, restful, encouraged, exhausting, wasted, regrettable, joyous, thrilling, eye-opening, inspiring, humbling, impactful, beautiful - and I am grateful. with any luck I still have (and a lot has been spent) I’ll make it to the other side of another forty years with the same reflection - that my days have been well-lived. by @ebarnard4315

The One Where She Got A Job - because watching Law & Order: SVU re-runs doesn’t pay the vet bills. by @ebarnard4315

I’ve felt like my garden was lackluster this year, a combination of living life and planting late. But then again…

I just cut my first harvest of dahlias and zinnias, and maybe if I’m lucky I’ll get to keep cutting through September. by @ebarnard4315

Strawberry stir in my coffee and chicken inside the waffle. @brew602 is worth the stop if you’re near Soldotna, Alaska.

btw: what is “stir”? by @ebarnard4315

The thing about Alaskans is…bad weather isn’t a hindrance, only a challenge. Despite heavy rain, very low visibility, and chilly temps, our fearless captain @happypuffintours showed us a different view of the Kenai Peninsula and Kenai Fjords National Park. Harbor seals, sea otters, sea lions, puffins and many other birds were observed, waterfalls and tree-covered mountainsides appreciated. It’s hard to not to feel disappointment over what could have been, but an adventure was had that won’t soon be forgotten and warm showers were welcomed with enthusiasm. by @ebarnard4315
