Today is Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day. Considering the blatant rampant antisemitism that is occurring worldwide, it is more important than ever to remember past atrocities. We cannot allow history to repeat itself. Never again, this phrase takes on a new meaning this year.

This is a copy of the letter my paternal Great-Grandfather, Solomon Fruchter, wrote to the American Consul in Sweden, in an effort to get my Zeide’s sisters, Rose and Luci, visas to America. After they were liberated from the horrors of the concentration camp Bergen-Belsen, they were living in a Displaced Persons Camp in Stockholm. At the time, Solomon thought that only two of his two of his seven children managed to survive the Holocaust, as he didn’t know that my Zeide (Grandfather), Meyer, was alive as well. My Zeide was forcibly separated from his sisters during Nazi occupation so they lost track of the others whereabouts.

Three years ago today, Isabelle, my beautiful Boston Terrier, passed away. It’s difficult to express just how beloved Isabelle was to me and my family and what made her so special. She was so intelligent and knew to be gentle when we brought her to the nursing home to see my Grandma. She would greet everyone there with a tenderness and patience even though she was so excited to see my Grandma and get some goldfish (and even a mallomar every now and then.) Isabelle was just the right amount of playful with children while still being (somewhat) docile. That’s not to say she wasn’t naughty at times and somehow she managed multiple times to get two dinners out of us. She was part of our family and her absence is felt. Love you and miss you always Isabelle. ❤️ by @ebfruchu

Today would have been Isabelle’s 16th birthday. Considering how she celebrated her other birthdays, no doubt it would have been one super sweet sixteen. I’ll love and miss her always. by @ebfruchu

Two years ago today, Isabelle passed away. There are still some days where I expect to see her enthusiastically greeting me when I open the door. Everyone that met her can attest that Isabelle was the most special and beautiful. There is no amount of time that will erase her memory. Love you forever. ❤️ by @ebfruchu

We all need to make sure history doesn’t repeat itself. A lot of people believe that with the end of the Holocaust, it was the end of Anti-Semitism as well, but the only thing the Holocaust ended were the lives of 6 million Jewish people (plus 11 million other lives).

On Passover, we commemorate the story of Moses and the 10 plagues that Gd released in order to convince the Egyptian Pharaoh to liberate the Hebrews from slavery. There’s a line in the Haggadah, a special prayer book for Passover, that says “in each and every generation they rise up against us to destroy us.” Throughout history, the Jews have been discriminated against and persecuted.

The likelihood for future atrocities increases when society fails to connect current Anti-Semitic mentality and rhetoric to the longstanding prejudices that have been repeated throughout history.
