This Scary BUT Important Realisation Impacts How I Parent:

The way I treat my children shapes how they treat themselves and others!

It also impacts what they expect from others and what they accept as normal!

I realised this as I reflected on my own life, my patterns of behaviour, what I expect and accept from others, how I talk to myself and how I subconsciously act to my children and so on.

Remember: REFLECTION is a key skill necessary for parenting success (see my Reel)

If our childhood experiences were positive, that’s wonderful. However…

For many of us, there were aspects that were less than ideal.

Here’s the crux of the matter:

Recognizing this pattern is crucial. Self awareness is key!

Next we must consciously put in the work to break the pattern, striving to create healthier dynamics in our relationships and parenting styles.

This journey involves self-healing, ensuring that we don’t inadvertently project our unresolved issues onto our loved ones – be it our partners, children, or friends.

This is what I help parents do!

I help you navigate through these patterns and foster deeper connections with your children.

Oh my 😅 I was so curious to hear how he’d finish these parenting phrases and his answers really warmed my heart.

Honestly, I’m glad he doesn’t have a clue what the ‘usual’ endings were .... And I’m going to keep it that way 🥰

Do you remember how these phrases used to end for you?

If you started them with your own child today, how would they finish them? 💭
Drop it in the comments. Let’s keep breaking cycles together.

1. Becoming a parent is life changing
💡But it’s the way we show up, our commitment to learning and growing that matters.

2. When we neglect our own needs, we teach our children that self-sacrifice is the way to love.
💡But a regulated, fulfilled parent is what children truly need.

3. Children need financial stability,
💡But more importantly they need connection, emotional safety, and consistent presence.

4. Striving to be a “perfect” parent creates stress, pressure and guilt.
💡Children need a safe space where mistakes can be repaired, and love is unconditional.

5. Just because something was “normal” in our childhood doesn’t mean it was healthy.
💡Breaking cycles requires reflection, not blind repetition.

6. How we model good values is what’s important, not attending services and quoting or misquoting scripture 💡🙏💡

7. Presenting an idealised version of parenting through pictures and social media isn’t good parenting
💡 Good parenting happens in the messy, unfiltered moments. The repairs, the lessons, and the daily consistent effort to show up for our kids.

💡 Good parenting is about accepting our mistakes, seeking continuous self growth, healing, reflection, compassion for ourselves and showing unconditional love to our children.

Our children can tell the difference!!!

Which resonates most with you? What would you add to the list? Let’s discuss in the comments! 👇🏽

🍂Growing up with a parent who struggled to regulate their emotions, and often had outbursts led me to believe

💭 “I am the problem.”
💭 “I am unlovable.”
💭 “I am to blame.”

To keep the peace, I learned to suppress my own feelings and take responsibility for others’ emotions.

Over time, this pattern shaped how I showed up in relationships, prioritising others’ feelings over my own, afraid of causing upset.

💡But emotions aren’t a child’s burden to carry. It’s NOT their job to manage our reactions.

✨ BREAKING THE CYCLE starts with us!

When we regulate our emotions, we teach our children that all feelings are safe, theirs included. 💛

Should you be your child’s friend? I think it depends on what we mean by friend.

Children need parents to guide, lead, and provide structure. They don’t need us to act like their peers.

But if friendship to you means trust, connection, respect, and emotional safety—then absolutely.

Because when children feel safe with us, they’re more likely to listen, respect boundaries, and turn to us when they need help.

Friendship isn’t about control. It’s about connection. And that’s exactly what helps children thrive. 💛

Rules matter, but without a strong relationship, they often lead to rebellion. – Josh McDowell

But let’s be clear, strengthening your relationship with your child doesn’t mean letting them do whatever they want.

A strong parent-child relationship helps them feel safe and seen, so they don’t just follow rules out of fear.

Instead, they make good choices because they understand themselves and the world around them.

When we start to see how our own upbringing influences the way we parent, it’s uncomfortable.

Change feels overwhelming.

Guilt creeps in.

It’s easier to dismiss the information than to sit with it.

But here’s the truth: Growth starts when we pause and ask ourselves…

❓Am I rejecting this because it’s untrue?
❓Or because it’s hard to hear?

Awareness isn’t about blame—it’s an invitation to do better. And that’s a powerful thing.

✨ Have you ever resisted a truth because it felt uncomfortable?

Let’s talk in the comments! ⬇️

These are real struggles I help parents navigate in my 1-2-1 coaching. There’s no one-size-fits-all answer when dealing with a chronically difficult co-parent, but there are strategies that can make things easier.

I also cover some practical ways to handle these challenges in my parenting course,

Communication isn’t just about what we say. It’s about how safe our child feels to open up.

If kids sense judgment, pressure, or that their feelings will be dismissed, they’ll shut down.
