English used to have a perfectly useful distinction between singular and plural “you.”

Then we got polite, “thou” largely disappeared, and “you” had to do both jobs.

So English speakers started inventing ways to make the distinction all over again.

And Southerners landed on an exceptionally efficient solution:

We’re remarkably good at recognizing when OTHER people are being influenced.

Advertising works on them.
Propaganda works on them.
Algorithms manipulate them.

We, of course, simply examined the evidence and reached our own perfectly independent conclusions. 😏

Psychologists call this the third-person effect.

And perhaps the most effective influence is the influence we never recognize as influence at all.

History feels ancient until you actually look at the timeline.

Cleopatra lived closer to the invention of the iPhone than to the construction of the Great Pyramid. Oxford was teaching students before the Aztec Empire existed. And woolly mammoths were still alive when humans were building pyramids.

We divide history into neat little eras.

The people living through it had no idea what chapter they were in.

To them, it was just Tuesday.
