Women from across the City of Detroit stepped away from their desks, responsibilities, meetings, deadlines, and demands to do something many of us struggle to make time for…pour back into ourselves.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀
To those that represented the City of Detroit’s Women Empowerment Network ERG, Well Being ERG, Detroit Health Department, Detroit Department of Transportation, Detroit Civil Rights, Inclusion & Opportunity Department, Housing and Revitalization Department our vendors, panelists, volunteers, supporters, and every woman who attended, thank you. Thank you for helping me create a space where wellness wasn’t treated as a luxury, but as a necessity. This was a reminder to us all that we are more than the work we do. Thank you for choosing to invest in yourselves and in one another.

My prayer is that every woman left with something she needed….a resource, a connection, a reminder, a moment of peace, a renewed sense of purpose, or simply the realization that she doesn’t have to carry everything alone. The women who serve the City of Detroit deserve to be poured into too.

At some point, you have to ask yourself…why does this keep happening? Because cycles don’t just repeat…they reveal. The patterns. The choices. The things we haven’t healed yet. And the truth is…we don’t always have space to process that.

As women, mothers, wives…we’re expected to keep going. Keep showing up. Keep pushing through. But where do you go when you need to exhale? When you need to be honest without being misunderstood?

Started the day at the @Detroit_Police Domestic Violence Awareness Walk, standing with my colleagues Leah & Donna on behalf of the City of Detroit’s @womensinspiringnetwork_erg and Well-Being Employee Resource Groups. I came to support, but I left carrying something. Hearing survivors and the families who love them tell the truth about what this does to our community, and how close to home it really is, will stay with me. This is not somebody else’s problem…it’s our neighbors, our coworkers, our sisters, and sometimes it’s the woman who looks like she has it all together. Thank you to the DPD Domestic Violence Unit for creating space for these voices. 🎉🎈Happy 70th birthday, Pops 🥹 Watching you fight to take your life back has taught me more about grace than any sermon ever could. I finally got this recap together from the summer of me sitting back watching my daughter and her besties listen to Black women who run rooms in industries that weren’t built with us in mind, and things like this always do something to my heart. Thank you @nwgoldbergcares for putting our girls in front of @Journeywithjg @Jemelehill, and @ChinaJude with @_Jeannatrotman hosting the conversation.

You can tell a girl she can be anything all day long, but it lands different when she watches someone who looks like her say it from the stage and mean it. Honeeeeey….the Sisters in Sole brunch was EVERYTHING 🤍 20 out of 10…highly recommend! I was the only one at my table from Detroit but these ladies had me feeling like a whole ambassador 😎 every single one said Detroit has been so welcoming and I love that for them! The setup was gorgeous, the panel had me locked in, I made the most beautiful bouquet and then I watched the rising stars get their flowers. A room full of beautiful women from different industries, every city, just connecting. I left with my cup SO full I didn’t even know what to do with myself. Thank you @plcdetroit @blackfootwearforum for a GOOOOOOD TIME 💐 I’m already looking forward to next year‼️So grateful to have been in the room 🫶🏾 by @ebonysicarra

Lisssssssten….So Mik and I talk…a LOT but the other night my daughter and I got into a conversation that reminded me she’s not just growing up, she’s growing wise. She asked me to press record, but she had something on her heart to share so here’s a clip. We were talking about what it really means to walk with God versus just talking about it, and she brought up something that stopped me in my tracks…she said just because someone goes to church or calls themselves a Christian doesn’t mean they’re not still struggling with wanting people’s approval more than God’s. Out of the mouths of babes 🥹🙌🏾. She’s thirteen, and she already knows that faith doesn’t make you immune to the pressure of pleasing people, it just means you’re supposed to keep choosing God over that pressure anyway. Proverbs 29:25 says the fear of man is a trap, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe, and watching my own child understand that while still in middle school made me sit back and check myself. I’m not sharing this to brag on Mik, though Lord knows I absolutely could. I’m sharing it because if a thirteen-year-old can name that struggle honestly, so can we. So can I, because calling myself a believer has never made me immune to caring what people think either. It’s worth asking ourselves, where in our lives are we performing the walk instead of actually taking it? by @ebonysicarra

GB (Granny Bear) turned 84 years young today 😍 and my girl is not accepting compliments as news!! 🤣🤣 That’s decades of knowing exactly who she is, and I want that kind of confidence when I get there. I’m so incredibly grateful to still have her here. Help me wish my grandma Happy birthday!! by @ebonysicarra

The plan was to post this after the event Friday, but life had other plans, I got tired, busy, you know how it goes. But anyway it’s still sitting on my heart and I couldn’t rest until I shared, so here it is. Even I hesitate before I share what’s mine to share. But that’s exactly what the parable of the talents is about, the servant who buried his one gift didn’t get punished for having less, he got called wicked for burying what he had. God didn’t ask him to multiply somebody else’s gift, just his own. Here’s the thing about your gift: if you don’t use it, out loud, in community, you’re not just shrinking. You’re robbing somebody of what was meant for them. That thing you keep almost-saying, almost-doing, almost-showing up as? Somebody’s waiting on it and doesn’t even know it. And I completely understand why we hold back. You use it a little, it doesn’t go how you thought, and you shrink back. Somebody’s opinion, or your own gets loud. So you use it less, which makes you less confident, which makes you use it even less. That’s not humility, that’s a cycle babe. So whatever’s yours say it, sing it, build it, share it. Don’t bury it waiting for the “right” moment. 💎 by @ebonysicarra
