New tradition for the end of the year! I’m a library gal for almost everything I read, but that means there’s very few books in my apartment and that just won’t do. Starting this year, I’m going to buy my top 5 favorite books of the year from 5 local independent bookstores! Had myself a lovely little Saturday a couple weeks ago playing in the snow and walking almost 8 miles around my city (delayed post because one book was out of stock and had to be ordered). My 2025 top 5:
Wild Dark Shore by Charlotte McConaghy - An absolutely stunning dramatic mystery set in a research lab in Antarctica. Explores love and grief, gorgeous writing on nature and climate change, full of suspense and tension.

Loved One by Aisha Muharrar - A brilliant portrait of the complicated reality of grief from one of the writers of Parks & Rec. Beautiful, messy friendships, first loves, and some silly hijinks.

What Kind of Paradise by Janelle Brown - Part coming-of-age, part historical/family drama, part social commentary on the role of technology. Provocative, resonant, creative, and deeply layered.

In Memoriam by Alice Winn - A breathtaking World War I queer romance that broke my heart many times over. A harrowing account of the horrors of war and a hauntingly beautiful love story.

The Compound by Aisling Rawle - Love Island meets Lord of the Flies, smart and very unsettling. Commentary on voyeurism, capitalism, and vanity, told through mostly unlikeable but fascinating characters.
