Join us for our next seminar featuring Ghassan AlRegib, Ph.D., the John and Marilu McCarty Chair Professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology! ⚡

Neural network–driven AI systems, including large-scale foundation models, suffer from critical vulnerabilities: they behave unpredictably under unseen conditions, confidently produce inaccurate outputs, and resist meaningful human oversight. Traditional robustness measures—simple invariance to noise and perturbations—are insufficient for real-world deployment. This talk presents a human-centric framework that decomposes robustness into three actionable pillars: explainability, uncertainty quantification, and intervenability. We argue that every prediction made by a neural network must be accompanied by contextual explanations, calibrated confidence estimates, and mechanisms for human intervention.

Join us for our next seminar featuring Alejandro Strachan, Ph.D., Reilly Professor of Materials Engineering at Purdue University! ⚡

Strachan's session will explore: accelerating materials research with physics-based simulations, machine learning, and AI. Machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) are impacting materials research and discovery in several ways. These range from enhancing physics-based models to providing predictive models or digital twins for resource-intensive simulations and experiments that can be used for decision-making. AI is also contributing to the ideation, planning, and execution of research. This progress, in combination with instrumented and accessible physical and digital assets, can accelerate research and innovation.

Armed with a prestigious federal grant, University of Florida engineering professor Laura Kim, Ph.D., and her research team will develop technology to detect early-stage endometriosis.

Kim, an assistant professor in the Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering, or ECE, was granted a Trailblazer Award from the National Institute of Health, to develop a minimally invasive diamond-based quantum sensing platform capable of detecting subtle magnetic signals at the microscopic level. These signals could provide a new way to diagnose endometriosis earlier and more accurately.

At the heart of the project is an engineering challenge: translating the extraordinary sensitivity of quantum systems into a practical tool for measuring biological tissues. Kim will apply her quantum-sensor technology into biomedical research for the first time, with endometriosis serving as an important first clinical application and with the support of her interdisciplinary research team.

With the cross-college collaboration, Kim is working with Jon Dobson, Ph.D., the J. Crayton Pruitt Family Emeritus Professor of Biomedical Engineering, and Amira Quevedo, MD, assistant professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the College of Medicine.

“Dr. Kim’s innovative technology has the potential to fundamentally change how endometriosis is diagnosed.” — Amira Quevedo, MD.

"Pick a skill, connect it to the semiconductor industry, and win great prizes!"

We couldn't have said it better ourselves. The Chip in Florida: K-12 Semiconductor Education Challenge is designed to be integrated with any curriculum, and highlight the diversity of future career opportunities available to students with differing interests.

We loved visiting Ms. Perry's "cleanroom" at Joseph Williams Elementary School. This challenge is an opportunity for educators to see the impact of early exposure in real time, and further the understanding of new concepts through hands-on learning. The result? Your classroom could be rewarded for participating in semiconductor workforce education!

From researchers and engineers, to supply chain specialists and business development managers, the real prize is creating accessible avenues to Florida's growing semiconductor industry opportunities.
