We are proud to share that U.S. News & World Report has ranked our online Master of Engineering in Electrical and Computer Engineering program #3 in the nation in their 2026 rankings.

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at U. of I. continues to push boundaries through cutting-edge coursework, world-class faculty, and research that defines the field. The University of Illinois Electrical and Computer Engineering Building was designed with energy efficiency at its core, ultimately achieving LEED Platinum certification and becoming the university’s first certified zero energy facility.

Across the exterior, 15,000 square feet of terracotta panels and sunshades bring a warm red-orange color to the building. The horizontal sunshades extend across the glass and continue overhead, filtering direct sunlight while creating changing patterns of light and shadow.

Together, the terracotta panels and sunshades make the material an integral part of both the building’s appearance and its high-performance design.

ECE Ph.D. student Wenjing Song has been named a 2026 Beckman Institute Graduate Fellow.

Illinois researchers have successfully demonstrated a superconducting electric motor designed to help bring zero-emissions propulsion to large commercial aircraft.

The CHEETA motor reached 1,500 RPM during its initial public demonstration, and testing has since pushed it to speeds of up to 2,400 RPM and torque of 400 N·m. Next up: higher power, continued testing and, ultimately, flight. ✈️
