At one point this season, I felt like I was on top of the world. I truly believed I was going to be a state champion. I had beaten everyone I needed to beat, and everything I’d done made it feel like I was meant to be the one standing at the top.
But a few losses right before state chipped away at my confidence, and when the moment came, I fell short. I didn’t make the finals. I didn’t bring home a title. I couldn’t even pull out the win for third. I finished fourth-again. The same place as last year, even though I know I’m a far better wrestler now than l was then.
The disappointment is something I’ll carry for a long time. It’s hard because I let myself down, and everyone who believed in me. When the clock hit zero and the reality of the loss sank in, I felt my dream slip away in an instant, and it broke my heart. I got to watch my friends live their dream, and that means more to me than anything. The bond we’ve built-the hours, the pain, the work only we understand-is the best part of this entire journey. It hurts that I can’t share that same feeling of winning state with them, but I’m still incredibly proud of them. Coach Ray and Spartan will always hold a special place in my heart. I’m grateful to be able to call Spartan my second home—it’s shaped me, pushed me, and given me people I consider family. This sport has brought some of the most amazing people into my life, who changed my life, and I wouldn’t trade a moment of it for anything. by @echo_wrestle
