🏛️ How is digital innovation transforming archaeology?

Through ECHOES, archaeologists can access advanced tools, collaborate across borders, and ensure that discoveries are preserved and shared through the Cultural Heritage Cloud.

In our latest blog post, we explore:
- How digital storage prevents data loss in archaeology
- The role of 3D modelling and AI in reconstructing artefacts
- Why international collaboration is key to preserving our past

This week in Valencia, several of the ECCCH sister projects share a stage.

EuroXR 2026 runs 3 to 6 November, and MusicSphere is organising two XR for Cultural Heritage Special Sessions.

Wednesday 4 November, 11:30 to 12:30: pitch session.
Thursday 5 November, 15:00 to 16:30: technical workshop on developments, technologies and use cases.

A specialised XR audience is far more likely to engage with a European ecosystem than with four unconnected projects using the same technology.

A lot of what an object has to tell you is not visible to the person looking at it.

Fibre structure in a fragment of cloth. The original colour under centuries of alteration. What sits beneath a painted surface.

The Cultural Heritage Cloud is being built so the analysis that reveals it stops being a one-off. When methods and results are shared, an analysis run on one object becomes a resource for everyone working on similar material.

TEXTaiLES on textiles. COLOURS on coloured collections. HERITALISE on hidden features.

Make the invisible legible, then make it shareable.

Four projects, four completely different reasons to use extended reality, one session.

The XR for Cultural Heritage session at EuroXR 2026 has its confirmed line-up, and all four come from the ECCCH ecosystem.

MusicSphere: organs rebuilt with the acoustics of the rooms they were played in.
EXCALIBUR: burial excavations and ancient human remains, through digital twins.
UNICHE: XR for people who cannot code.
MNEME: five pilots across Greece, Spain, Slovenia, Italy and France.

They are going together rather than separately, and that is the point.

Infrastructure is an argument about values, whether or not anyone writes the values down.

ECHOES wrote them down. Six founding principles for the Cultural Heritage Cloud:

Open science and inclusivity.
Collaborative knowledge production.
Holistic digital transformation.
Sustainability and interoperability.
Community-centric design.
A clear legal framework for tools and data.

Each one constrains the others. That is what makes them principles rather than slogans.

The case for documenting cultural heritage is easiest to make where heritage is most at risk.

On 20 October, ECHOES was presented at the ICOMOS 2026 Triennial General Assembly in Kuching, Borneo, by Andreas Georgopoulos and Alex Yen, in a session on Disaster Risk Management and Capacity Building for Cultural Heritage.

In Europe the Cultural Heritage Cloud tends to be discussed as interoperability, standards and access. In a conversation about disaster risk it becomes a question about time: what has been recorded, in what detail, and whether it exists anywhere other than the place that may not survive.

The Cultural Heritage Cloud now has eight more projects whose job is to find out whether it actually works.

The first thirteen Sister Projects build components. These eight put the ECCCH into real institutions, with real collections.

POLARIS: libraries, including the British Library and its 750,000 digitised volumes.
AVCloud: Europe's audiovisual heritage, fifteen use cases.
HERITWIN: five pilots, from Sweden to Greece.
MNEME: five more, from Slovenia to France.
UM-EU_WWII: nine urban sites, eight countries, over 3 TB.
CULTUR-ACT: institutions as a proving ground.
Narratia: generative storytelling for under-visited sites.
Walking Memory: AR memory walks built with communities.

One question underneath all of them. Does this work where the work actually happens.

This is what the ecosystem looks like when it works.

On Friday 23 October, ECHOES is holding a webinar for the Italian cultural heritage community: A Shared Ecosystem for European Cultural Heritage, ECHOES and the Cultural Heritage Cloud.

We are running it with ICOM Italia, the Scuola nazionale del patrimonio e delle attività culturali and AVICOM, who lead EMPOWER-CH, one of the projects funded through our second Cascading Grants call.

A project we funded to bring the Cloud to museum professionals is now doing exactly that, through their own national network.

In Italian, with full English interpretation throughout. Open to everyone, members and non-members alike.

16:00 to 19:00 CEST. Registration at the link in bio.

The most common question we get is also the most reasonable one. How do I actually take part in this?

ECHOES has published a booklet that answers it: How to be part of the Cultural Heritage Cloud?

The context for the Cloud Architecture, the Data Model and the Integration Framework, and how institutions, projects and stakeholders can integrate their resources into this emerging European Digital Commons.

A manuscript that has never been transcribed is, for most purposes, a manuscript nobody can read.

The Virtual Transcription Laboratory is the ECHOES application built to change that at scale. Automated processing for volume, expert human curation for judgement.

Historical newspapers. Manuscripts. Cuneiform tablets. Oral history. Different languages, scripts and centuries.

What comes out is not a picture of a page. It is structured, searchable, reusable data.

Two conservators can look at the same surface and see two different things. Both may be right. The problem has always been recording that properly.

OCRA, the Online Conservation Restoration Annotator, is the ECHOES application built for exactly this: annotating heritage assets collaboratively in 3D and relightable 2D.

Every annotation separates where you are pointing from what you mean, so one area can hold several interpretations that disagree, without overwriting anything.

A record that survives disagreement instead of flattening it.

Most of what survives from the ancient world survives in pieces.

A fragmented object is a problem no single institution can solve alone. The evidence needed to understand it is scattered: the fragments in one museum, the comparative material in another, the excavation records in a third, the specialist knowledge somewhere else entirely. Each holder sees a part. Nobody sees the whole.

This is one of the things the Cultural Heritage Cloud is being built to change. When fragments, records, analyses and models sit in a shared and interoperable space, reconstruction stops being a single institution's project and becomes something a field can do together.

It is already happening at project scale. MusicSphere is building a Digital Twin of the Hydraulis of Dion, the oldest surviving pipe organ ever discovered and the earliest known keyboard instrument in history, invented in Alexandria in the third century BCE. The original is fragmentary, so the missing components are being reconstructed through archaeological evidence, historical sources, material analysis, 3D reconstruction and acoustic modelling, recreating not only the instrument but the sound of the space it once played in.

One instrument, rebuilt from evidence held in different places by different people. That is the method. The Cloud is what will make it ordinary rather than exceptional.
