Dana Sousa-Limbu will be speaking at @yarmonics Festival on 27 September 2026, exploring sound systems in the city, DIY co-production and what happens when we listen together.

Following a day of site-specific performances on 26 September, YARMONICS will host a programme of talks bringing together ideas and practices around sound, place and collective listening. Dana will share The Urban Listening Room: Build in Process, reflecting on how building a sound system together can become a way of building knowledge, as well as relationships and space.

The weekend marks the beginning of a new communal listening space in Great Yarmouth. Very excited to be part of what takes shape. See you there! taken in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk by @echosmonde

LISTENING IN PROCESS

What do we hear when we listen?

On 15 May 2026, Cultural Lead of The Urban Listening Room @daddydarkrdc brought to life the stories and sounds that led to the creation of the Run Dem Sound system. Its positioning within the East London university space @uclurbanroom a reminder of the importance of creative storymakers in the production of knowledge. On video, @andretomlin_ captures the vibrancy of Charlie Dark’s power in bringing people together through sound.

On 28 July 2026, we continue our processual adventures into sound as space with The Urban Listening Room: Spatial Audio Experience, presented within @queenelizabetholympicpark’s The Music Is Black Festival.

The ‘Build in Process’ Sound System

Nothing without its process, its prototype, its people, this system represents a continual approach to questioning what a sound system really means, particularly at a time where we see so many.

10 individual and portable units come together to produce a single system. Composed from plywood panels and hand crank sirens, this system highlights the essential role of people in its activation and meaning-making.

PROCESS BEFORE PRODUCT

The Urban Listening Room: Build in Process series highlights the importance of DIY in sound system culture.

Solo nights spent on funding applications. Collaborations built on friendship. Favours called in from personal networks. Last minute Uber rides. Set-up and clean up. Word of mouth promotion. Doing things without permission.

A moment to spotlight just some of the people and the parts making the designing, prototyping, building, space-making and activating of sound systems possible across the 14-15 May 2026 workshops and listening session.

The start of a commitment to a longer-term craft of understanding how people are brought together in space through sound. by @echosmonde

BUILD IN PROCESS

But not without first diving into why we’re bringing sound system workshops into a university like UCL, and a crash course on design engineering and the physics of sound.

Many thanks to The Urban Listening Room’s technical lead @david.chen02 for leading our first day of the workshop, and to our participants for their engagement.

Join the listening session on Friday 15 May 2026, 6.30-9pm @uclurbanroom to see the sound system in process (link in bio).

LISTENING AS BUILDING

What does it mean to host a listening session? Who are we listening to, and why?

‘The Urban Listening Room: Listening Session – Build in Process’ brings together project collaborators and audiences in East London to reflect on this collectively.

Emerging from a two-day sound system workshop, this free session listens to uncertainty, testing, adjustment, and resolution in real time, while previewing the sound system developed across the workshops as it comes into being.

Hosted by @daddydarkrdc, the evening continues a journey first opened through our November 2025 session with Run Dem Sound. Listen to selected vinyl records, conversation, and the relationship between sound, space, and collective presence.

While open to all, spaces are limited | Book your spot

THE PROTOTYPE

On 6 May 2026, we welcomed @david.chen02 to the UCL Bartlett School of Architecture to lead an early prototyping session for the sound system that will be collectively explored through ‘The Urban Listening Room: Build in Process’ workshops and listening sessions across 14-15 May 2026 (link in bio).

Working at the intersection of DJ culture and design engineering, David proves fundamental to how this system is built, tested, and experienced in space, and is so generous in sharing his expertise.

Thank you to @daddydarkrdc, @bandi.jala, Arella Ezeugoh, @coldconditioning, Tandi Nywanza, @a_mante, and Dana Sousa-Limbu for this participatory research.

We received an overwhelmingly positive response to the workshop call-out and are deeply grateful for the interest. We’ll aim to respond to all registrations by Monday 11 May 2026.

For those unable to join this iteration, we’re continuing to build support for future free workshops and listening sessions bringing people together in space through sound, preserving the sonic culture of London.

Soundscape curation and production for the exhibition ‘Rooted: Layered Knowledges, Shared Soil’ entering 2026.

Layered through this piece are voices, pauses, laughter, and breath. Stories of moving cities and finding (or not finding) home. You’ll hear reflections on community, loneliness, language, and belonging; on navigating institutions, missing what we once took for granted, and building new forms of care and connection in unfamiliar spaces.

If you weren’t able to hear it in the space, this is an invitation to pause and listen, and to reflect on how much room and time we really make for stories that are often silenced, muted, marginalised, or displaced within our institutions.

What happens to these stories once they are briefly platformed? Where do they go next? Will these roots remain, or are they only ever given space for a moment?

As ‘Rooted’ moves into the @uclurbanroom as part of the ‘Manifesting’ exhibition @ucleastengage (until June 2026), these questions continue to unfold, asking whether our environments truly support the stories they claim to hold.

Thank you to everyone who trusted us with their voices, your stories. This work exists because of your openness and care.

This soundscape is for making visible and audible the labour, care, and stories that help communities take root. taken in London, United Kingdom by @echosmonde

‘Rooted: Layered Knowledges, Shared Soil’ runs from 12-26 January 2026 at The Bartlett School of Architecture, 22 Gordon Street, London, WC1H 0QB.

This exhibition centres Pan-African and Indigenous ways of knowing, asking how land, memory, labour, and collective care shape the spaces we inhabit. As with all community-led work, it is grounded in trust, and in gratitude for the relationships that make intimate storytelling possible.

Though only up for two weeks, the exhibition refuses erasure. It invites academic and public audiences alike to engage with practices that have long sustained communities beyond dominant institutions. We welcome your contributions to our interactive Seed Wall that founds the legacy of the exhibition.
