I’m super excited to announce that I will be the new Head Coach at Escondido Charter High School.

This is an opportunity I’ve dreamed of for a long time, and I’m beyond grateful to lead a program that will be built on culture, character, and connection.

Our mission will go far beyond wins and losses — we’re here to develop tough, selfless, and resilient young men who succeed on and off the court.

Huge thank you to Shane Goodwin and the entire Charter admin team for believing in me, and a special shoutout to Coach Dave for being such an important part of this process. by @echsboysbball

Baseline drives can be difficult to operate out of if you aren’t able to create an angle.

In this segment we started shoulder to shoulder attacking baseline but driving out of different spots.

Players only had three options to utilize:

1) 2 Foot Finish
2) Nash Dribble Score
3) Get into a Barkley

If they did anything else it was a turnover. by @echsboysbball

This season we have the capability of playing a high pressure defense so everyday we’re going to play some sort of 1v1 to help our guys prepare for this.

Part of playing high pressure defense is that your going to get beat, so the first few drills we do are recovery drills learning what to do when you get beat and how to recover.

We’re teaching our guys to sprint back in front of the ball taking an angle to get a chest stop. If that doesn’t happen and we can’t cut them off early enough we need to have our hand further at away from the ball shoot up in the air to make our selves as big as possible to take away passing lanes and shots. On the pick up we’re teaching to wall up with both hands up. by @echsboysbball

Our offense is built around capitalizing off of advantages. In order to be really good at that you have to be good at reading closeouts. So this off-season we’ve focused a ton on reads out of closeouts and how to be more effective in these situations.

In the 1v1/2v2 segment we gave players an additional point for stampeding the catch and scoring or generating a bucket. We also had players follow our spacing principles on the drive and pushing and pulling depending on where the drive went. by @echsboysbball

The Gortat screen is a great coverage solution to utilize vs drop. This was in league play last season and we had a few teams in our league that loved to play drop vs us.

We encouraged the ball handler to utilize the snake dribble and to put their defender in jail. This only works if your big sprints to seal the drop defender and if your ball handlers are patient and can play with some pace.

This was only a small segment of practice and we threw a bunch of coverages at our guys and had them play vs a variety of coverages. by @echsboysbball
