DAY 3: CARACOL OVENTIK

EL DÍA DESPUÉS

On January 1, 2025, I woke up 31 years after the initial uprising in El Día Después. Literally and Symbolically. My illness had improved likely due to the blend of tradicional and western medicine from the autonomous clinic. I was well enough to experience the second half of a play in six parts by youth from the 12 caracoles. “El Día Después.” Or how I understand it: the day after the storm; the day after the collapse; the day after capital ceases to have power; the day after empire falls; the day after this civilization of death. For city dwellers, water is no longer running, food is no where to be found, electricity down, pharmacy shelves empty. Violence increases. Homicide and illness are rampant. Depression, hopelessness and desperation become a new reality for affluent society. A reality not too far from where we are today. Those who experience the luxury of convenience at the expense of blood, suffering and death of los de abajo. There is a scene where desperate people storm Zapatista territory, destroying anything out of fear, looking for survival. The rich who make it out of their Haciendas or penthouses face a rude awakening for the first time that they are just like everyone else. Either learn to work the land collectively or suffer. The play comes to an end in a ceremonial way. All the youth retreat into the hills and emerge again in traditional earth ware. Drums and flutes bring joy to life again as compas go around sharing what their skills are and what they are willing to offer in común.

I realized for a lot of us outsiders, those who come from major urban centers, the core of empire, the symbolism of this glimpse at the day after was in the illness that hit us. Many outsiders fell ill and either did not make it to Caracol Oventik, or left early returning to the luxuries of convenience.

Once again, I am left with questions. Are we prepared to face the violence that will come with collapse? Are we facing reality enough already to see el día después in our day to day? What will we have to do to build lo común in our geographies?

Day 2: Caracol Oventik

LA TORMENTA: EL SISTEMA CAPITALISTA HACE QUE SEA VERDAD LA MENTIRA Y LA VERDAD LO DESMIENTE

As I write this, the sky is covered with think layers of capitalist casualties. People’s homes, flora, fauna, American Dreams simmered away by grandfather fire. How sacred is this one? Despite the haze, La Tormenta is clearer than ever.

On December 31, I woke up in La Selva Lacandona with body aches, fever, nausea, no appetite, and fatigue. I tried to ignore it all as I sat through a play in 6 parts performed by youth from the 12 caracoles. This one was on La Tormenta. It showed how corporate interests, mega projects, governments, politicians, cartels, military, and other heads of the capitalist hydra work together to steal land, displace its original peoples, murder, destroy Mother Earth, and repeat. It’s all one viscous cycle. The luxuries of Empire’s core are at the expense of blood, suffering, and death. The play was disturbing to watch, but much worse to live. It was the reality of what pueblos originarios experience in the day to day. It was a story of modern day colonial violence, a 532 year version. What is the root of human greed? Where does the obsession for never ending profit come from and what will it take for the sickness of filthy rich capitalists to be treated? Are there any other ways besides a bullet? That night, before the 31st anniversary of the armed uprising, Sup Moises reminds the world “We do not want war. But we are ready to defend ourselves.” As I ask these questions, dealing with biological parasites, I realize how capitalism is an ideological parasite too. We are all infected.

DAY 1: CARACOL OVENTIK

“Entender es una cosa. Practicar es otra.”

Without saying a word or making any gesture, my immediate experience entering Caracol Oventik was presented with the question through action alone: ¿Y ustedes que? It felt like arriving to what readers of Octavia Butler’s Parable of the Sower and Parable of the Talents know as Earthseed. But this is not science fiction. This is reality. The manner in which we outsiders were welcomed was in común. The idea that we are all connected did not feel debated, doubted, questioned, or some romanticized version of interconnected spirituality as is easily practiced in the U.S. It is a way of life here. I made my way through the entrance, communal gathering space, and to our sleeping quarters in silence. Listening. Caminando preguntando. Everywhere you look, communal buildings beautified with murals of revolutionary philosophy, anti-capitalist messages, symbolism to remind us that la Tierra somos. The infrastructure is in relationship with the earth, not against it. Coming from the hyper-individualized megapolis’ of Los Angeles and Mexico City, this immersion in Zapatista común was disorienting at first. My body, mind, and spirit dealing with the lies forced on us in the U.S. about how to live in submission to capital. This introduction to autonomy did not feel dream like an academic theory or an abstract word. This is another world-a grieta en la hidra capitalista. As the moon danced over the convivo to the sounds of banda, corridos, cumbia, and compas sharing struggles until the sun began to peek, I found myself in a catharsis. Profound joy from experiencing que otro mundo es posible. Deep sadness from the reality of having to return to the misery of the United States. Siembra en su corazón la necesidad de organizarse.

Mesa Rebeldía y Resistencias Parte II. Mujeres

Mesa Rebeldía y Resistencias Zapatistas. Parte III. Los Primeros Pasos del Común Zapatista

La Cofa del Vigía: Señales al Mañana

“Sin mujeres no hay revolution.”

In her opening palabra, Otomí vocera Anselma Margarita recognized “532 años de resistencia rebeldía…a las comunidades y barrios que nunca fueron conquistaron.” No nos conquistaron. This is the attitude of this encuentro internacional. Zapatismo is teaching me to maintain a stubbornness of resistance in mind, body, spirit and belief that otro mundo es posible. Listening to the first generation of Zapatista abuelas speak their story of rising up in arms in ‘94, the experience of Zapatista women, jovenas and relationships with partidistas should be studied and analyzed if we are to build anti-patriarchal relationships. In the so called United States of Mentiras. Anselma continued “La Tormenta es global. Nuestras luchas deben ser global.” During a break in the Mesa at CIDECI-UNITIERRA in San Cristobal, the question stubbornly stayed at the front of my mind: How do we maintain connection between anti-capitalist struggle in México and the United States? A compa from Chiapas responded “Yo siento que deben empezar a reconectar con tu raíz, cultura, como pueblo originario.” I was surprised by this response. Re-membering indigeneity is sensitive in the U.S. There are those who are serious about it, those who romanticize it, those who sell it, those who reject it, and much more in between the complexities of being de-indigenized. I understand it as one of many ways we recognize la tierra somos. Patriarchal capitalism forces us to forget that. Sup Moises asks participants at CIDECI in speaking on non-property: como vas a vender la tierra? Venderás tu mamá? A simple but profound dialectic that exposes the logic of patriarchal capitalism. Day 1 of the Mesas y Ponentas de Resistencias y Rebeldía Zapatistas:

La Tormenta, El Crimen, el Verdugo, y las Victimas

Genelogía del Común Zapatista

La Cora de Vigía: Una Larga Vista Hacia el Ayer

My consciousness has been cracked open. My spirit revitalized. Nine hours of palabra, analysis, history, proposals, and visions of our way out of this civilization crisis that is global capitalism shared. For the compas, “Solo hay una forma de salir-el común”. This idea of el común is crucial. The compás shared how they arrived at this other form of relationship by listening, studying, and analyzing the life, or rather non-life, of their abuel@s on fincas, how they left, and what was done to survive. They emphasize they had no books or manuals to arrive at this solution. They are not communists. It is different from the overused and disorienting anglophone word “community”. You will never hear the state using a concept like el común in the same sentence as “civilization, progress, development.” La tormenta is global capitalism. El día después es el común. Hay que hacer todo en común. Subcomandante Insurgente Marcos opened the mesas with his palabra-“Tengo un enfermo, quieren saber qué es?…la pérdida de memoria, por los redes sociales, la incapacidad de la gente que tengan conocimiento por el gobierno.” Nuestra memoria sigue manipulada. El crimen organizado transnacional no es fallo del sistema, es parte de él. Entonces, cuál es el major camino para destruir al sistema capitalista? Ya no es y tú que? Es y nostor@s qué?

What is in the way of practicing el común in the global north, the United States in particular, and the anglophone world in general?

This reflection is by no means complete. Of course, much more was said. I continue walking and asking questions, and making sense of the new forms of sentipensamiento shared. Hasta la próxima…

Dispatches from Zapatista Encuentro by @xakariazb

“Muchos mundos…siempre muchos mundos.”

After a 15 hour caravan from Mexico City to San Cristóbal de Las Casas, Chiapas, and endless plática it is clear that it does not matter what geographies or calendars we came from. What languages we speak. What religions we preach. What has brought us here to encounter each other is a shared politic of anti-capitalist struggle-the root of the myriad ways we suffer in our civilizations of death managed by those who want to commodify everything about life. The jaws of global capitalism are becoming stronger. But so is the resistance. A compa who is a historian of México has shared that Zapatismo is in a unique transformational period. Historically, social movements have by now have lost their momentum, become corrupted, or have become nostalgic memories of past revolutionary possibilities. But even though the EZLN has faced increasing narco gobierno violence and completely dissolved its long standing organizational structure (MAREZ & Juntas de Bien Gobierno) and has established an alternative, there is no hesitation the organizing will go on. I asked a Guerrerense compa, a representative of his pueblo originario in the CNI, how can we connect our anti-capitalist struggles across borders at encuentros like this?“It’s already being done. As we are doing now-sharing our struggles with each other. We each fight in different ways and different contexts, but we cannot fight alone.”
