7-10 years is how long most companies have to prove they are worthy of getting more funding… not exactly the timeline of ecosystems …
If you love (like me) small brands, sustainable brands, companies who’s goal it is to change how and what we consume and to align those things with making the planet better, we HAVE to understand the funding system underlying it!
Welcome to my new series How Is This Shit Funded? where I am going to break down this opaque financial system that is fundamental to scaling change (whether we like it or not). It’s time to break down jargon and speak the same language because it’s gonna take ALL of us understanding, compromising and for fucks sake explaining the acronyms, to make this word a better place.

The fact that paying workers a living wage and small batch production means a lot of people who want to buy the clothes can’t afford them is pretty messed up. You should be able to afford small brands. So, let’s talk about one reason why small brands are so expensive… introducing Minimum Order Quantities.

Let me know if this is something you want me to dive deeper into because the system we are all trying to exist in is a complicated one!

When I first discovered @marfastance I thought it was too good to be true… I researched further and for once it was just as incredible as I thought!
Growing up we would laugh at zip off pants, but my god were our dads onto something!
Marfa Stance takes multi purpose to a whole new level of sophistication and luxury (not to mention sustainability). It is a brand that makes you question why clothes are made the way that they are… and if there is one thing I love, it’s questioning (and improving) what is considered the status quo 🫔

Relationships are a risk mitigant.

I’ve been quiet online because I’ve been busy offline! Myself and my two best friends launched the inaugural @spirewy convening in our home town of Jackson, WY.

Our thesis is simple: interdisciplinary collaboration is the key to architecting a resilient economy. Our future depends on being able to collaborate across sectors, especially between traditional finance and resilience leaders. So, we brought institutional finance, family office, tax experts, lawyers, soil scientists and land experts together. To tackle the difficult task of saying ā€œI don’t knowā€

My favorite moment was when a professor asked an investor what ā€œsyndicationā€ was, when we were brainstorming creative solutions. Ask the question. Breakdown the jargon, because when you do you quickly realize how much more we have in common.

Here’s to silo-breaking and learning new things in front of people you just meet. To breaking down complexity into story’s worth sharing. It will take us all to create the future we want to live in.

When I realized I have an outfit made entirely of upcycled button down shirts by small brands from Maine 🤯
Support small brands. Buy local. Wear what already exists.
If you need me I’ll probably still be in my backyard eating grapes from the vine and jumping around because rad brands like @thedriftcollective and @farmandthemoon exist šŸŒ€āœØšŸŒ

People ask me all the time ā€œwhere should I shopā€, ā€œwhat brands are ā€˜bad’?ā€ and I always say the same thing:

The best thing you can do is wear what you have or what already exists. Lucky for us that there are so many rad brands taking what already exists and creating beauty šŸ¤ŒšŸ»

When the majority of a supply chain is on an island, you have to look into it… not to mention they make some of the most magnificent knitwear I have ever had the privilege of touching 🫠

@inis_meain is the definition of sustainability, community and craftsmanship.

Although I have been known to get seasick on a swing (wish that was a joke), I will be downing dramamine and taking a boat to the Aran Islands the next time I find myself in Ireland šŸ‡®šŸ‡Ŗ

You all know I love a series and I needed a faster way to share all of the RAD brands doing cool shit bc editing the Cool Brands Doing Rad Shit series is no joke (epic brands coming your way soon šŸ‘€)

SO introducing Brands That Give A Shit , where I’m going to share the brands worth knowing about

#sustainablefashion #smallbusiness #independentbusiness #slowfashion #madeinamerica

Methodology matters people - so here’s what I’m looking for when I look at a brand (not all brands check every box, but every brand checks at least one):

1. What is the quality of the clothing? Aka materials, sourcing choices
2. What is the durability of the product? Do they offer repair services, are they using the correct fabric for the garments intended use? Is it made to last?
3. Independently run: we NEED to support small businesses more then ever right now. Not all small businesses give a shit but there is a much higher chance that they do
4. Small batch: do they purposefully over produce? Or do they think about how much they are putting out into the world
5. Do they care about the people that make the clothing? The manufacturers that are at the front lines of the negative impacts of bad supply chain practices
6. Craftsmanship: do they celebrate the artistry of textiles and the incredible history and talents surrounding this industry by @eco.cetera

Update on @sezane degrowth rebrand: no manifesto that I’ve seen yet, but we did get a preview of the new products … we got an overall relaunch timeline so let’s hope the manifesto comes out on the 18th or the 21st and then I talk a little bit about how this whole degrowth pivot is possible aka who’s funding this shit?
I’m keeping my eyes and ears out - this is a fun one to track! šŸ‘€
