It’s the political catchphrase Trump repeated again and again throughout his campaign - all about extracting more fossil fuels.

Now he’s back in The White House, Trump has declared a ‘national energy emergency’. The executive orders he’s signed this week will make it easier and cheaper to drill for oil and gas.

He wants to roll back green energy investment, including stopping more wind farms from being built. But will he get his own way?

What a privilege to share the stage with @chrisgpackham2 and esteemed panellists at a very different kind of climate conference.

👉 Channel 4 Earth presents: How to Unfuck the Planet 👈

We hosted two debates - the first on whether it’s ‘time to break the law’ following Packham’s recent documentary. Are climate protests all we have left to make the UK government sit up and listen?

The second debate was about debunking growth in the economy. We discussed if ‘we can grow the economy and solve climate change at the same time?’ Including the difference between ‘degrowth’ and ‘green growth’ - and why we only measure growth through GDP?

Last weekend I spent the summer solstice at a microfestival in Cornwall, where NATURE was the headline act.

Garden of Tomorrow was a cultural experiment of just 300 guests, and every artist on the lineup had the same rule: to deeply collaborate with the living world on stage.

We danced to @itslouisvi blending hip-hop with endangered frog calls, while @cosmosheldrake DJ’d using beats made out of humpback and sperm whale clicks, layering in sounds of a degraded Indonesian coral reef.

It might sound super hippy, and it was.

But it was also beautiful - and definitely not a gimmick. All the profits from the festival went straight to @earthpercent, a charity founded by @brianeno that links the music industry directly to frontline environmental action.

They fund projects all over the world, from marine and coastal conservation in Cameroon, to restoring ecosystems in the Congo and Amazon rainforests.

It just reminded me of the power of music to move people.

If we’re gonna shift political headwinds and save the planet, we need people to feel connected to it. It takes more than just data nowadays - we need culture to help shift mindsets.

A few days of magic and connection at Katapult Future Fest - one of Europe’s leading gatherings of investors and changemakers funding positive impact.

It took place in the legendary eco community and artists’ village of Ruigoord, on the outskirts of Amsterdam. A place long associated with experimentation and free thinking.

We hosted a debate on the provocative question: Can defence ever be an investment in humanity?

The topic of dual-use technology is a big one at the moment. Satellites and drone tech being used for crucial conservation purposes, like tracking deforestation or marine environments - faces being co-opted by defence industries to use in military environments.

So should we be investing in this tech if it carries such a risk?

Then again, without impact investors in the room guiding conversations towards ethics and responsibility (by helping to set guard rails and shaping the governance of this tech) the risks could be even greater.

As geopolitical instability rises across the world, issues like energy sovereignty, food systems, cyber resilience and climate technologies are now increasingly being viewed through a security lens.

It was a pleasure to moderate the debate with @solambin and @debatable_live , with some incredible arguments made by the debaters, including:

As well as the debate, I got to attend workshops, fishbowl discussions, talks…bonfires, which expanded my mind and got me out of the echo chamber.

The economy, health, the weather.

All terms we’ve started using to get through to people - instead of the word climate.

Staci Roberts-Steele is the producer of the movie
‘Don’t Look Up’ and in our interview at @sxswlondon explained to me what’s happened since Trump came back into office - and how it’s changed her approach to storytelling in the film industry.

@yellow.dot.studios and @mr.ghostpanther (Adam McKay) are experts in political satire.

The whole film is about two astronomers who discover a massive comet on a direct collision course with Earth - following their frantic, failing attempts to warn humanity.

It’s one BIG metaphor for political indifference, media distraction and how we treat the climate crisis.

With the most all-star cast imaginable (✨ Leonardo Di Caprio, Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence, Jonah Hill, Timothy Chalamey, Ariana Grande…etc etc ✨) it’s the most incredible example of allegorical fiction cutting through to the general public.

Only focusing on the problems, without talking about the solutions, is “the own goal of the climate movement.”

👉🏼 Lucy Stone from @climate__spring explained to me this week at SXSW London…

It’s a sentiment that rings true in the newsroom too.

News, by its very nature, is reactive not proactive, so we often wait for things to ‘happen’ before we report them. It’s the events, like extreme weather, which create the urgency.

But do audiences still respond to immediacy in the same way? The statistics show doom, gloom and scare mongering doesn’t work anymore, it switches people off because it makes them feel powerless .

Instead of asking ‘what happened?’ journalists should increasingly ask ‘what is likely to happen, and what can be done about it?’

Britain was built for winters - so how does it survive extreme heat? With temperatures scorching the country this week, we need to completely change how we live during a heatwave, according to the latest report from the independent Climate Change Committee (CCC).

From setting maximum temperatures for workers, both inside and outside, to installing air conditioning in care homes and moving school exams out of peak sunny hours, the advice states that the UK is not prepared - and we need to adapt.

Back in 2022, the record 40 °C summer caused over 3,000 early deaths and a 500% spike in 999 calls. The report says, by 2050, summers hitting 40 to 45 degrees are predicted to be the "new normal".
