“Design isn’t just how something looks. It’s how it feels when you arrive.”

Forbes put into words what has always been at the heart of Cooper House.

For us, design begins long before anything is built. It starts with listening to the people, place, and history that give a space its soul. From there, every detail grows with intention, shaping not just what guests see, but how they feel the moment they step through the door.

This is what we mean by storytelling you can walk through — the belief that hospitality design can honor both memory and meaning.

From OKC to Indiana, North Carolina, and beyond, these stories belong to the communities who let us help tell them.

Somewhere between light and shadow, PENUMBRA begins.

Design Appétit celebrates its 10th anniversary this year with In Full Spectrum, an exploration of color through design, cuisine, art, and experience.

For our second year collaborating with Chef Gabriel Lewis, we started with a single color: purple.

From there came PENUMBRA, an exploration of the fleeting transition between day and night. Violet giving way to shadow. Heat meeting aged copper. Light breaking, shifting, and eventually disappearing.

The environment will bring together Cooper House’s creative direction, Tim’s sculpture and light work, and a menu by Chef Gabriel that evolves alongside it.

What that becomes in the room, we’ll save for October.

Until then, consider this your first glimpse into PENUMBRA.

Follow along with @designappetitokc as In Full Spectrum unfolds, and head to their page to learn more about how you can be a part of this year’s event. by @ecooperstudio

The San Antonio summer has finally passed, and this project we’ve been working on forever is about to open. I’ve been dying to show it to you because it’s honestly one of those buildings you have to see to believe.

At the center of it is this completely bonkers 1926 theater, designed in the Aztec Revival style of the time. Sun-motif stained glass, incredible ornamentation, violently red graphics everywhere. It’s a lot, in the best way.
The offices that wrapped around the theater have now become a hotel, and we developed the brand concept and visual identity around the rising sun and the heavens. We named the rooftop bar Zenita, a nod to the zenith, the highest point in the sky. I kept thinking about the whole experience of seeing an amazing show in the theater, coming upstairs afterward for a drink under the San Antonio sky, and then eventually floating down to bed on a cloud.

That became our little world for the hotel.

We made everything for the identity from scratch, drawing inspiration from the surreal and beautiful architectural details already in the building. Because of its historic significance, there were a million sensitivities and preservation requirements to work around. We really tried to be thoughtful with it, respecting the building’s character and architecture, because the things that make these old buildings so challenging are also the things that make them worth preserving.

Anyway, it’s finally almost here. I’m so curious to see what it feels like when all the pieces are actually alive together.

I can’t wait for you to see it.

There are places that ask you to slow down and stay awhile. Hotel Wildemont was imagined with that feeling in mind.

Set in Mountain Brook, Alabama, @hotelwildemont is a new hospitality experience shaped by its surroundings and the character of the community it calls home.

Cooper House has been working alongside @davidsonhospitality to build the world of Wildemont, from the thinking behind the brand to the details that will eventually become part of a guest’s stay.

We’ve been holding onto this one for a while, and we’re happy to finally begin sharing it.

This is Hotel Wildemont. More of its story is coming soon.

Moving beyond what’s known is the first part. Being fully present as we learn, listen, and experience is the next. Here’s to diving deep into a Louisiana summer.

For us, the work begins long before the project does. It starts with understanding the people, the landscape, the history, and the stories that make a place irreplaceable.

Grateful for the warm welcome and generous hospitality along the way.

Meet Hotel Operis.

A new chapter in Charleston, shaped by the city’s rich relationship with art, culture, and performance.

Cooper House led the renaming, repositioning, and rebrand of the former Grand Bohemian, working closely with the hotel team to create an identity distinctly its own.

We’ve been waiting to share this one. Consider this your first look.

We took a flying (driving actually) trip to Austin to visit family just before Christmas. The city has changed so much since the last time we visited three years ago. Change is constant, of course, and there are so many lovely little pockets. We met some amazing people as we often do chatting with hospitality folks. Drank coffees, tried on fur coats (it was 82 degrees) and took the kids to all the Christmasy things. 🎄 @austinproperhotel @carpenterhotel @hotelsanjose @southcongresshotel @austinmotel by @ecooperstudio

Meet Hotel Orielle.
After months of work behind the scenes, we’re so happy to finally share a project that has meant a great deal to our team.

Yesterday, a familiar hotel along Savannah’s riverfront stepped into a new chapter as Hotel Orielle. The property has been part of the city for years, and this evolution gave us the opportunity to consider what its next chapter could look and feel like while remaining deeply connected to Savannah.

Cooper House has had the privilege of playing a meaningful role in bringing this new identity to life alongside an incredible team of collaborators.

For now, we’re celebrating the reveal and everyone who helped make it possible. There is so much more behind Hotel Orielle that we look forward to sharing soon.

Welcome to the world, @hotelorielle.

MEET TEAM 05.

Returning creatives Erin and Tim Cooper of Cooper House and Chef Gabriel Lewis are coming together for Design Appétit for the second time, an encore to their first collaboration and Cooper House’s debut at the event last year.

This year, the starting point is purple. The concept, PENUMBRA, explores that infinitesimal moment when day transitions into night, moving through light, heat, violet, shadow, aged copper, and fractured illumination.

Tim, who is a sculptor, will have work featured throughout the environment, including copper pieces and light installations. At each stage of the experience, the menu and the space will evolve together, creating something atmospheric, dramatic, and entirely tied to color as transition.

It’s our second year together, but it will be a completely different experience. We’re so excited to share it.
