How might desing contribute to create space for dialogue and debate about a controversial topic like new genetic technologies?

With a group of students, we worked on this topic for two weeks, diving into science, traditional crossbreeding, various ways of farming.

The resulting exhibition provides space for thinking, discussion and dialogue. The mobile lets us play with the viewpoints of different actors and understand mechanisms of power.

Experience the essence of rooting in a place and the sense of community. The journey was filled with discussions, self-reflection, and exploratory concepts of their individual research topics.

Posted @withregram • @hslu_masterdesign 🎉Congratulations to Thamjeedun @thetinyspeck_ on winning the Social Impact MAD Award with her master project, Not so school 🎨🎭👾

Not So School is the result of immersive community collaboration and interdisciplinary skills. It aims to create alternative learning spaces for tribal children and provide them with more opportunities in life.

Thamjeedun spent 5 months on the Jawadhu Hills in southeastern India and forged strong bonds with the students there. Despite a 50% school dropout rate, she uncovered the great potential in the students and was determined to improve access to education through design intervention.

Navigating politics and administrative norms was challenging, but Thamjeedun received incredible support from the community. "They not only provided help but also showed me the power of collaboration in overcoming these challenges," she says.

Her interdisciplinary design background was crucial. With an architectural background, she envisioned spaces catering to children's needs. Her knowledge in Eco-social Design helped address social challenges and promote sustainable practices.

Thamjeedun’s next steps for Not so school include raising local governance awareness, promoting the local economy, and exploring alternative teaching and learning methods.
