Have you ever tried bubble scrubbing? It’s an old school technique that seems to have been forgotten by a lot of younger reefers.

Every week or two, I take a powerhead or turkey baster to the aquascape to blast loose all the settled detritus. But blowing it off is only step one—a lot of that fine particulate just ends up settling right back down into tight crevices or under dense SPS bases.

That’s where bubble scrubbing comes in:

Captures suspended waste: the bubbles gives all that floating detritus something to bind to, keeping it suspended instead of letting it resettle.

Brings it up to be filtered out: The upward air lift sweeps everything directly into the overflow so mechanical filtration and skimmer can actually pull it out before it breaks down into phosphate and nitrate.

If you combine it with coral snow it’s even more effective!

A long metal scraper is a reefers best friend! I try to clean of the bottom from algae about once a month as it looks so much cleaner.
Scraping the back wall should be mandatory for all reefers 😜 a clean back wall really makes your fish and corals pop and gives the tank a much crisper look!

Reefing doesn’t have to be complicated. 🪸

Starting your first reef aquarium can feel daunting. There’s a lot to learn, plenty of equipment to choose from and even more decisions to make.

But what if getting the right flow was the easy part?

Steve catches up with one of the minds behind the iconic EcoTech Marine VorTech to discuss just how easy (or complicated!) reef keeping really needs to be...

Great technology shouldn’t make reef keeping harder. It should make it easier.

And that’s exactly what EcoTech Marine set out to do.

Feeding confirmed! The newly added achilles is doing well and has started feeding on both frozen food and flakes. No aggression to speak of…at least not from the other fish lol. It did try to fight my annularis angel which is probably 15x its weight 🤣
Some spots of ich has appeared but that was something I anticipated and not overly worried about. It should be fine as long as it’s feeding well.

It was so great to see everyone who stopped by our booth at @Reefapalooza California this weekend! by @ecotechmarine

Some equipment just becomes part of the reef 🪸🔥

For years, the EcoTech Marine VorTech MP40 has been one of the most recognisable flow pumps in reef keeping - powerful, controllable flow with no wires inside the aquarium.

In this reel, @theyorkshirereefer adds a new @ecotechmarine MP40 to his reef and gets it set up.

Clean. Simple. Proven.

Create the flow. Let the reef respond.

I’ve “discovered” that this is actually an awesome way to feed the fish. I just stick the frozen cubes to one of the MP60’s and it will gradually be dispersed throughout the tank….an added bonus is that it looks funny when the fish tries to catch pieces of food right in front of the pump 😜
Oh and hopefully I’ll have the time to get started in the cabinetry for the tank in a couple of weeks…I just have to get done changing the paneling on my house first 😂

Can you really keep large angelfish in a full reef tank without them destroying your corals?

The short answer: Absolutely. Right now, I’m successfully keeping five species (Regal, Emperor, Annularis, Blueface, and Goldflake) alongside mature Acropora colonies and even LPS like torches and frogspawn.
The idea that angels are automatic coral killers is just hobby dogma. If you want to make it work, it comes down to 4 critical factors:

1️⃣ Feeding (The #1 Key): Hungry fish look for food. Satiated fish leave your corals alone. Angels are facultative corallivores at worst—they prefer sponges, algae, and small crustaceans. I feed my tank 4x daily via auto-feeder, add Nori daily, and feed 6-8 cubes of frozen mysis in the evening.

2️⃣ Coral Selection: Mature Acropora colonies do great (avoid tiny frags that can’t handle a little curiosity stress). Torches, Frogspawn, Catalaphyllia, and Goniopora have potent stings and usually get left alone. Avoid fleshy, zero-sting LPS like Micromussas, Acanthophyllia, and Trachyphyllia—those are hit-or-miss.

3️⃣ Tank Size: Ample space keeps them active, reduces boredom, and lets you stock more fish to keep them socially preoccupied. Aim for at least 500–600 L for long-term success with large angels.

4️⃣ High Flow: Strong flow keeps them working and busy throughout the day. I notice a direct increase in coral nipping whenever I turn my pumps down!

Reality Check: Yes, you will get less daytime polyp extension. That’s entirely natural—it’s exactly how wild reefs look during the day because things are always picking at them. At night, the polyps come out in full force.
