🥡 Starting something new or reviewing your current takeaway packaging supply?

Choosing packaging for hot food starts with what you’re actually serving. Heat, grease and moisture can all affect how a container performs, so the right format for one menu item may not be right for another.

Structural integrity matters too. Containers need to hold their shape, stack reliably during storage and service, and perform during takeaway or delivery — while remaining comfortable and practical for customers to handle.

At the link in our bio, we’ve put together a straightforward guide to choosing takeaway packaging for hot food.

What has your wooden cutlery been tested for?

🍴 A couple of posts back, we looked at why paper napkins shouldn’t automatically be assumed to be suitable for composting simply because they’re made from paper.
The same principle applies to other frequently used foodservice items: ask what they’ve actually been tested for.

Our wooden cutlery has undergone:

✅ Total fluorine testing in accordance with EN 14582, to a 20 ppm detection limit. Total fluorine testing can be used to screen for the potential presence of PFAS.
✅ Heavy metals testing in accordance with the US Model Toxics in Packaging Legislation (TPCH).

If you’re unsure what testing has been undertaken on your current cutlery supply, ask your supplier for the evidence.

❓ What is PLA, and when should you use it?

Polylactic acid (PLA) is a biobased plastic most frequently made from renewable plant feedstocks such as corn starch or sugarcane. It offers similar transparency, gloss and rigidity to conventional plastics such as PET, making it useful where food visibility matters.

🌡️ One important difference is heat resistance. PLA is designed for cold food and drinks and can begin to soften and deform at temperatures above 43°C.

If you operate a salad bar or deli, or serve smoothie and açaí bowls, clear PLA packaging can provide the visibility of conventional clear plastic while using a material derived from plant crops.

📥 Not sure whether PLA will work for your menu? Email hello@ecoware.co.nz to organise samples.

We’re seeing growing demand from our customers for FSC®-certified products, particularly across our takeaway cup range, which is very encouraging.

More businesses are considering where the materials in their packaging come from, how they are sourced, and looking for recognised certification when making purchasing decisions.

Ecoware holds FSC Chain of Custody certification (FSC-C142978). This certification supports transparency and accountability in forest supply chains through independent evaluation.

Paper is an important and central material across much of our packaging range. As businesses have moved away from certain single-use plastics through initiatives such as plastic bag, straw and cutlery bans, paper has become an increasingly important alternative. But choosing paper is only part of the consideration. Where that paper comes from is important too.

FSC certification gives businesses a way to consider the sourcing of the fibre in the products they purchase.

Are paper napkins compostable? Napkins are often accepted by default as a compost input, but being made from paper alone doesn’t necessarily make a napkin suitable for composting.

Paper products can contain inks, coatings and other chemicals introduced during manufacturing. PFAS can also enter recycling streams and transfer into secondary raw materials during the processing of recycled paper.

✅ Our paper napkins are certified for industrial composting to ASTM D6400 and verified by the Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI).

🔬 They have also undergone a PFAS Substance Panel test in accordance with ASTM D7359. Testing by Intertek did not detect the tested PFAS substances above the 8 ppm detection limit.

If you’re reviewing frequently used hospitality supplies such as napkins, look beyond the material. Independent certification and testing provide evidence to support more informed procurement decisions.

Plastic-free. PLA-free. Aqueous. Recyclable?

If you’re comparing takeaway coffee cups, you’ll increasingly see these terms used to describe a paper cup.

PLA-free tells you a cup doesn’t use PLA but it does not tell you what the barrier technology is — and sometimes it is not always clearly communicated.

And a “plastic-free” claim needs to be understood in the context of the definition or certification being used.

Coffee cups need a barrier to stop liquid soaking into the paperboard. That barrier might be PE, PLA or an aqueous coating and understanding what it is matters when considering what happens to the cup after use.

Our latest guide 🔗 linked in our bio looks beyond the marketing language at what takeaway coffee cups are made from.

Food-waste separation must be as frictionless as possible. And for any kitchen with organics collections, bags mean less odour, contractors prefer bags because it means clean bins.

We’ve put together a guide covering liner sizes, strength, certification and different applications from office food-scraps bins and commercial kitchens to coffee grounds. Link to guidance in our bio 🔗

We’d be interested to hear what businesses are doing in practice. Are you using a contracted organics collection already, considering one, or finding there are still barriers to separating food waste? by @ecowarepackaging

Start with the food, then choose the packaging.

🍔 Is it greasy or heavily sauced?
🍜 Does it contain a lot of liquid?
🍟 Does it need to stay crisp?
🥡 Will it spend 20 minutes on a bike travelling?
🍛 Do different components need to stay separate?
🔥 Will it be reheated later?

A burger, ramen and portion of loaded fries all place very different demands on their packaging.

Food designed to be eaten immediately may only need a tray, chip cup or greaseproof paper. For fried food, avoiding unnecessary enclosure can also allow steam to escape avoiding a soggy and dissatisfying meal.

Our guide looks at choosing takeaway packaging for burgers, hot meals, street food, sauces and more, considering how material and construction affect food integrity and performance.

What should your standard takeaway coffee cup size be? Is the 225ml THE standard now?

Consistency is so important in the industry. Making coffee has become increasingly precise and the cup is a part of that experience. At a glance:

☕ 110ml — espresso, macchiato and piccolo
☕ 225ml — the everyday workhorse for flat whites, cappuccinos and lattes
☕ 285ml — a useful middle ground for customers wanting more
☕ 355–400ml — genuinely large drinks where recipes and pricing need to scale accordingly

The espresso-to-milk ratio needs consideration, then there’s milk use (read, costs), menu pricing, lid compatibility, storage and the number of SKUs your team needs to manage.

Our new guide looks at building a takeaway cup range around your coffee menu, customers and workflow.

What happens to your packaging after it leaves your premises? How far does your coffee cup travel through the city? Or how does your paper bag move through an office building? How much of your packaging is on Instagram?

Broadly we think custom branded packaging increases brand exposure but it is more than this.

We’ve looked at the behavioural psychology behind why custom branding can be valuable.

Repeated exposure builds familiarity and subconsciously also, brand preference. Because, seeing other people carrying the same packaging repeatedly provides a form of social proof and can become a form of social currency.

Custom printing is an investment, and minimum order quantities, storage and cash flow all need to make sense. Our custom coffee cups, for example, start at 30,000 units.

For businesses that aren’t there yet, stamps and custom stickers can provide a more accessible way to start building brand recognition.

How are you currently using your takeaway packaging to build your brand?

Packaging manufactured from PLA that is certified compostable to industrial standards is capable of being composted. So why is there still so much confusion surrounding it?

Certified PLA is tested against recognised compostability standards that specify conditions for disintegration, biodegradation and ecotoxicity.

The reality is that composting facilities must have operating conditions and processing time that mirror those test environments if they are to successfully process these materials. And often this is not the case.

We’ve updated our guide to six of the most common misconceptions around PLA bioplastics.
