My grandfather on my father’s side, Saturnino Navarro, was a brilliant self taught guitarist. Being the only one in my family who pursued music, he always encouraged me to explore the rich catalogue of Peruvian Music. But as often happens when you’re a young immigrant kid, you’re so eager to fit in that cultural stuff like that doesn’t become a priority.

Later in life, I began to appreciate the depth of the music, the lyric, the composers, the artists, the recordings and the instruments, but feared approaching the compositions out of doing the music and my culture an injustice.

Thanks to the programming of HPMA’s “Festival de la Herencia Hispana” this last weekend, I saw this as a perfect invitation and challenge to finally introduce “Project PERÚ”.

I am so grateful to finally collaborate with fellow Peruvian @ecuell She is one of Houston’s leading jazz vocalist who consistently performs with such precision and passion. My goal musically was to replicate classic mid-century Peruvian recordings that have become standard repertoire, immediately identifiable to any Peruvian of any generation, congruently, offering historical and cultural context to each composition. And thanks to the talents of this collective, we were able to pay musical respect to these recordings:

I want to personally thank General Consul Mr.Jorge Lazo of the Peruvian Consulate in Houston for his attendance and words shared about the proud and strong Peruvian community here in Houston and of the weight and impact of these songs. He was in the front row and sang along to every word!

Ermelinda and I hope to present Project PERÚ again in the near future. Until then…

A few captures of today’s rehearsal. We’re getting ready for HPMA‘s. Festival de la Herencia Hispánica. I am so excited that I get to sing with these musicians and do songs from my parents homeland Peru.
In these few clips, we’re doing the intro of Esta es Mi Tierra. Featuring our wonderful percussionist. Jesus Pacheco with Mayara Velasquez cello and Alex Navarro on accordion.
