🏐🎓 ABAVA–UWI Athlete Scholarship Spotlight - Miguel Peña-Lugo

Miguel’s Volleyball Journey

Miguel Peña-Lugo is one of the student-athletes benefiting from a scholarship collaboration between the Antigua and Barbuda Amateur Volleyball Association (ABAVA) and UWI Five Islands Campus, an initiative that helps athletes pursue higher education while continuing to develop their sporting careers.

Miguel’s interest in volleyball began in sixth grade, and by seventh grade he had joined his high school team. Since 2023, he has been with High Flyerz Volleyball Club, rising from starting setter for the junior team, Phoenix Flyerz, to starting setter for the senior side in the ABAVA league.

On the sand, he has represented Antigua & Barbuda at the ECVA U21 Beach Championships (from 2023), the 2024 CAZOVA Championship in Tobago, the 2025 NORCECA Beach Tour in Juan Dolio, and the 2026 CAC Beach Championship in Santo Domingo. At the 2026 ECVA U20 Beach Championship in St. Kitts and Nevis, he and George Freeland finished a commendable fourth.

Indoors, he competed at the XVIII Pan American Senior Men’s Championship in Mexico and the 2025 ECVA Men’s Final Four on home soil. That range shows his versatility and his drive to keep improving.

Now studying Sports Coaching, Miguel hopes to give back through coaching while chasing a professional career. His story shows that sport and education can strengthen each other.
