When I was five years old, my mom took my older sister and me on a trip to Ethiopia. Even at such a young age, it was one of the most formative experiences of my life. That iconic trip left a lasting impression on me, connecting me to my heritage in ways I couldn’t fully grasp at the time.

Whenever people find out I’m Ethiopian, the most common question I get asked is, “When was the last time you went back?”. Last year, someone asked me that very question, and I was shocked to answer that it had been almost 20 years since that childhood trip. The thought of so much time passing by truly bothered me, and I couldn’t shake the feeling that I had lived that much of my life without returning.

This past December, I finally had the chance to go back. I spent a month in Ethiopia, immersing myself in our rich culture and history, reconnecting with family I hadn’t seen in almost two decades, and reuniting with old friends. I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to make new memories and “re-meet” my loved ones as an adult.

It was so humbling to feel how much love and familiarity still exists, even after so many years.

I’m happy to report that I made it back to Ethiopia in 19 years, 4 months, and 8 days 😎

I refused to let myself hit that 20 year mark!
