Last week Landscape Architecture at the University of Greenwich won the renowned Ribas Piera International Landscape Architecture School Prize. The announcement was made on Friday on the final day of the International Landscape Architecture Biennial in Barcelona.
/
The New Coasts projects presented during the Biennial focused on five MLA/MA Landscape Architecture student works, describing an approach of designing climate impacted landscapes through making tapestries. The five projects were authored by MLA/MA Landscape Architecture students: Rachel Clements, Flynn Morton, Hannes Aava, Ria Marshall, and Sam Simson. The inventive and collective approach was developed over three-years, involving 38 students and three tutors - building on the work of numerous others across the school over many more years.
/
The University of Greenwich was part of a 10-strong shortlist from 65 university submissions from around the world. There was also a public exhibition of all school submissions and during the Biennial all shortlisted schools presented their projects and their pedagogy. In addition to the striking techniques of making tapestries, Greenwich was commended for a focus on climate impacted coastal landscapes, collaborative student approaches, and actively engaging with policy.
/
Gratitude to all the Biennial organisers, led by Marina Cervera, and the Ribas Piera jury: Gary Hilderbrand, Huang Wenjing, Luis Callejas, Eulàlia Gómez-Escoda, and Hayriye Eşbah Tunçay.
/
Credit to all the students, tutors (especially @helena________rivera_________ and @kalliopi_b , and colleagues at the University of Greenwich.

To celebrate the University of Greenwich winning the Manuel Ribas Piera International Landscape Schools Prize, MLA Landscape Architecture graduate Rhiannon Marshall designed and co-edited this New Coasts Studio publication. The small book describes the studio approach and profiles the five projects that were submitted for the prize, including by Flynn Morton, Sam Simson, Hannes Aava, Rachel Clements, and Rhiannon Marshall. The publication includes contributions by Marina Cervera Alonso de Medina, the Director of the Barcelona International Landscape Biennial, Prof. Jane Harrington, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Greenwich, and myself and Helena Rivera as studio tutors.
