In case you missed it, or have been dying to know more, here is a recap of what we talked about on our most recent show on @sistermidnightfm.

Real ones know, September is the true new year; it is the dawn of fall and back to school. And even though we’re no longer students, we spent the hour embracing the chance September brings to start anew.

Mya kicked us off with a short lesson on Vogue’s September issue, the magazines largest publication of the year used to reflect on the year prior and make predictions for the year to come.

Moving into music, we discussed the new year ritual of making playlists to set the tone for the year ahead. We all know how powerful music is when it comes to your mood, style and how you carry yourself day to day. Many of the most iconic romcoms of the 80s, 90s and 00s begin in September, with back to school as a common thread, and an iconic song to play their heroines into the hallowed halls of high school. 16 candles, 10 things I hate about you, mean girls, clueless, grease… the list goes on. With new beginnings the girls must reinvent and music is no stranger to this concept. Covering and sampling popular songs and beats has been a tool used by artists for many decades. But the best ones are never carbon copies, artists take their own sounds and apply them to the ones we all know and love. To close out the episode we played a song by the beloved Dolly Parton, a song she wrote but was not famous for singing, a song that describes how we all feel about her.

A recap of last show’s references on @sistermidnightfm if you missed it. All about Music, Fashion, & Film…🎙️👠🎬

We chatted our favorite culture moments, fashion phenomenas, & powerful women who define what it means to be a pop star (shout out Dolly we love you).

For music we discuss the groundbreaking and iconic video,Like a Prayer, and the use of religious ephemera in creating a provocative performance. Paralleling Madonna and Jesus, we consider them the first two pop stars laying ground work for reinventions like Charli xcx’s Music, Fashion, Film. Madonna didn’t make sliced bread - she IS sliced bread. F is Fashionnnn! The Lil’ Kim to JT pipeline and redefining aesthetic boxes for Black women and knowing how to break them. The Cutting Room Floor allows us to hear JT’s backstory of how she became a ‘fashion girl’ and expanding who that can include. Edith brings us the concept of ‘boy’ and leaning into it, letting your hair down. It’s layered it’s colorful, it’s sweaty, and it’s free. Inspired by a boy at Shadwell Basin (you know who you are) he’s the blueprint. Lastly ending on film, we discuss the flirtatious dancing and forever wanting more through the choreography in Sweet Charity and the iconic Parker Posey in Party Girl.
