I’ve been working on this piece for quite a while. It’s based on a concertina book I drew last year. As you can see, it has involved a LOT of embroidery. It ties up into a neat little roll and I’m very pleased with the effect. taken in Berwick-upon-Tweed by @edgetascot

As usual I'll be working right up to the wire on the 24th November producing new work for the solo exhibition ' Subtexture' in Edinburgh's Dundas Street Gallery. There'll be a mix of recent work from the past five years since returning to Scotland and there'll be some brand new. Whatever the result, it'll hopefully be a treat for the texture addicts out there. Hope to see you there.

The @seam_collective #SeptTextileLove26 prompt today is 'Oversize'. No, I'm not going to talk about plus-sizes in fashion. I'll talk about scale and its recent importance to Textile Art.
Textile Art, as we all know has long laboured under the reluctance (to put it mildly) of Art establishment gatekeepers and galleries to recognise Textile Art as a valid medium for Fine Art. I won't get into the whys here but it's a considerable obstacle to anyone choosing Textile Art as an expression beyond craft or decorative art. In recent years there have been positive and encouraging signs of a shift in attitudes though. It's important to point out that much of this change in perception is being driven by an increase of women curators working with high-status public galleries and they deserve respect and gratitude for their battles behind the scenes.
It's also important to point out that much of this shift has happened around large, often monumental-scale work. Recent shows dedicated to Magdalena Abakanovich, Olga de Amaral, Chiharu Shiota and El Anatsui have brushed away accusations of lack of committment and of limited artistic ambitions and expression within Textile Art. Even the most delusional Art critic couldn't reasonably liquidate De Amaral's work as 'mere craft'. All very welcome but there's an elephant in the large room. Most textile art is by nature time-consuming and complex. It Isn't an ideal medium for large-scale, monumental expression, so where does that leave the majority of its exponents working at a more natural, sustainable scale without teams of assistants?
My personal reaction to the shift was to scale-up. Regardless. Although my first significant sculptural piece 'Totem' is by no means monumental in size, it is when you consider the work and time invested in it. On completion I concluded my techniques weren't sustainable at this scale. And yet, here I am working on a series of these sculptures - one of which currently stands at almost 6ft. The downside of scaling up, I've found is that it's difficult to scale back down afterwards without feeling there's a loss of ambition.
