The world is watching, and Oklahoma City is having its moment! Our very own Shai Gilgeous-Alexander @shai is gracing the cover of TIME @time, and the Thunder @okcthunder superstar isn’t shy about where he stands.

“I think I’m the best player in the NBA.” — SGA

And he’s got the résumé to back it up. Two consecutive NBA MVP awards, an NBA championship, Finals MVP, a scoring title, and a place among basketball’s all-time greats.

In TIME’s new cover story, Shai opens up about his remarkable journey from an overlooked young player to one of the most dominant forces in basketball, the criticism that comes with greatness, and his determination to bring another championship to OKC.

Oklahoma City has always known there’s something special happening here. Now the rest of the world knows, too.

Thunder Up, OKC! 💙⚡️🧡

Save the date for Thursday, October 8th at @okcsweetsbakery . We’re going to pack out the case with all things pink and you are not going to want to miss it!!! This cause is personal in a way I never imagined it would be just a few months ago. I’m so grateful to be able to lend my story in the hopes that it will continue to raise awareness, encourage women to take care of themselves, and continue to fight for breast health. We look forward to seeing everyone who is able to stop by on Thursday and are thrilled to donate a portion of proceeds to @okprojectwoman to help further their mission! 💕 taken in OKC Sweets by @edibleokc

Ben Birdwell @benjaminbirdwell fondly remembers a day soon after he bought the plot of land in northeastern Oklahoma City where Ralph’s Ranch @ralphsrowdyboyranch now sits. It didn’t look like much at the time—just an abandoned horse stable on 10 acres. “I was going through a bit of an existential crisis,” he said, as many people were during the pandemic. He moved onto the property, and not long afterward asked a couple of friends to come over and give him some tips about farming. Birdwell knew a little bit about plants—he’d grown up visiting his grandfather’s (the original Ralph’s) cattle ranch and helping his dad tend to their home garden. But all in all, he didn’t know much.

Six years later, with 10 employees, a 2-acre farm, a subscription flower service, an annual yield of 50,000 flowers and 800 pounds of vegetables, hundreds of customers, a small menagerie of orphaned animals, and a community gathering and event space, it’s clear that Birdwell has gotten “in” pretty far.

Ralph’s Ranch primarily grows flowers, including favorites like ranunculus, zinnias, sunflowers, snapdragons, marigolds, dianthus, and celosia — as well as local native varieties of rudbekia, echinacea, and cone flowers. His “flower club subscription has become a popular offering. As for produce, Ralph’s also grows tomatoes, cucumbers, okra, beets, lettuce, arugula, spinach, carrots, herbs, blackberries, strawberries, peas, radishes, turnips, and kale. They host a weekly market at the farm from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays, and they have a booth at the Saturday Farmers Market at Scissortail Park @farmersmarketatscissortailpark.

“We’re an unapologetically queer farm,” he said. At the same time, Birdwell says, he considers the farm to be a meeting point of many different kinds of people from Oklahoma. It attracts people who come from different walks of life. “Everyone, including super conservative people, feels welcome at the farm,” Birdwell said.

The Word: Abalone

Although pronounced the same, abalone and a baloney - as in “a baloney sandwich” - are completely different foods: far from being a congealed paste of ground-up livestock, an abalone is an edible mollusk found off the coast of California. English borrowed the name of this mollusk in the mid nineteenth century from Spanish Americans, who in turn had previously taken the word from the Monterey Indian language. The scientific name for this mollusk is Haliotis, a Greek compound meaning sea-ear, so named because the abalone shell is shaped like the human ear; ear-shell, in fact, is a common, alternative name for the abalone.
