It feels surreal to be posting anything business related while so much turmoil is happening right now in our country. But if you’re sitting home or working in the snowstorm right now and feeling overwhelmed, outraged, lonely and looking for connection, we are here for you.

Edible Philly has always focused on building community - among our farmers, artisans, chefs, customers and neighbors. And we will continue to serve as an independently published magazine offering uplifting and positive stories to bridge gaps, offer new insights, and connect us all more deeply.

THE HUMAN EYE HAS A FANCY FOR ALL THINGS GOLD. Some of the most precious can be found in garden, field, and forest.

On the hottest day of summer, Sungolds polka-dot the green vines of my tomato field. Hands leathered green from tomato sap, I pluck the Sungolds from the calyx and fill my bin until it’s brimming. The Sungolds shine back up at me like the glowing suitcase in Pulp Fiction. I do my best John Travolta twist, one good enough to win Uma Thurman that trophy.
I snap out of it and portion off a pint for my dinner tonight. That’s enough nightshades for today, I think.

On my ride home, I take the scenic route through the ravine. The tight two-lane paved road meanders with the stream that has shaped it for centuries. A pleasurable drive. The road bows and carves beside the stream, inviting quick acceleration and hard braking through turns that hug the stream.

At this time of day, the south side of the ravine burns with late-evening glow. Schist glimmers back and dances in my eyes, a geologic disco ball. The north side of the ravine stands statured with grand oaks and beeches that provide shade and humidity. My attention is diverted from the dancing schist and quickly captured by gold patches spotting the green ferns and brown leafy masses. I know what grows in the shade like that.

I slow down and pull off onto the gravel turnout. The tires crunch to a halt and I reach around for a bag. This red Wawa bag will do. I hop the guardrail and duck beneath an old felled birch, which gives access to the hillside where I saw them. I then make my way to the gold.

I squat down like a prospector with his pan but instead I fill my bag, leaving plenty behind, and head back to my truck. I place the mushrooms in the cab beside the pint of Sungolds and dream of dinner tonight. A quick score for taking the long way home.

Pennsylvania dairy is having a moment and we are here for it!🐄🥛 A2 yogurt, Icelandic skyr-style yogurt, and cultured butter hand-packed by Amish makers all made right here in PA. Alex George, a baker, content creator, former Fox 29 reporter and cancer survivor, releases her debut cookbook In the "Mood to Bake" this month with 75 recipes that prove baking is meant to be fun, messy, and totally delicious.

And her take on ‘happy little accidents’? "Even if you mess up a cookie, you can throw it in a pint of ice cream and have something else great."

Whole pigs from Lancaster County. House-made andouille. Mushrooms grown in the back room. Chef @sonnyingui runs one of Philly's most thoughtful kitchens at @urbanfarmerphl a steakhouse attached to @theloganhotel. His relentless effort to maintaining sustainability in the hospitality business is just one of the reasons Sonny was named our 2026 Local Hero Chef!👨‍🍳

Farm, kitchen, community table. @rootstoriverfarm in New Hope, PA is a one stop shop for all three. Farmer Malaika Spencer grows the produce, chef Ian Knauer cooks it, and on a busy night 200 people show up to share it together. 🍽️💛

Knauer says it best, ""What happens is what always happens when you eat with strangers,” he says. “You’re not strangers anymore.”
