As Soul Music society we stand unequivocally with the UCU

As most of you will know, Peter Mathieson has announced this year that the University of Edinburgh is planning to make £140 million in cuts, with a planned £90 million of this as staff cuts. This proposition could lead to up to 2000 members of staff across the academic, technical and professional services fields being made redundant. Alongside this, the university is set to close 90 programmes to new applicants, including 48 (!) from the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures, several courses centred on Scottish heritage, and 3 ECA craft programmes.

The reasoning given by senior management for the cuts is that the university is having financial issues. On the contrary, the last report showed a £104 million surplus. In addition to the fact that the university is not even in a deficit, Peter Mathieson himself has a yearly salary of over £400k and a second job (and when asked, he claims he doesn’t even know the exact figures for what he’s paid). With this in mind, the pattern of the closures is easy to see; arts and humanities are expendable to management because they do not make them money – they don’t, for example, attract millions of pounds in Defence funding.

Clearly, the proposal is a blatant and shameful disregard of the university’s own supposed values and its duty as an educational institution, putting plainly on display how management runs our place of learning and community (a registered charity!) as a business that’s willing to trade both workers and students for inflated profits. At the same time, they ignore our calls for divestment and usher the UoE’s complicity in the genocide of the Palestinian people, investing in the war machine that continues to fuel the occupation.

As the Soul Music Society, we stand unequivocally with the UCU during the ongoing 5 weeks of strikes, and we call for all students and staff to support them – pressure senior management to resign, get organised at the staff student assemblies and don’t cross the picket lines!

This is our university and we will not let them trample all over us. by @edisoulsoc

Soul Society stands unequivocally with the Palestinian people and the Edinburgh University Justice for Palestine Society.

We join Edinburgh University’s Justice for Palestine Society, along with countless students, staff, societies, alumnis and others in calling for the University of Edinburgh to immediately divest from AnyVision, Blackrock Inc, Alphabet and Amazon, companies that have ties with the ongoing genocide in Palestine.

It would be disingenuous as Soul Society to not stand for social justice. Soul music is more than a genre. It is a cultural and political expression of resistance and hope. Soul emerged from the civil rights movements and the lived experiences of Black communities in the 1950s-70s. It became the ‘soundtrack’ of Black pride and liberation. Our support for the Palestian people aligns with this history of Soul, fighting for freedom, dignity and equality.

We encourage our followers and friends to join us in condemning the university’s actions by keeping up to date with the events held by EUJPS.

From now on, a share of our profits made from our events this year will be donated to Palestinian families.

From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.

THANK YOU!!
With all of your help, we raised a whopping £1389 for the UCU Edinburgh strike fund

We are incredibly proud to have raised so much money for the UCU strike fund all thanks to Superfly!
Not only is this an INSAAANE amount of money to have raised for a brilliant cause, but it reminds us all how much student action can make a difference

As most of you may be aware, on the 23rd September senior management announced cuts of huge amounts of staff (nearly 1000 have lost their job already) and 90 programmes. The university has stated that we are not in a deficit, yet they are fundamentally damaging our opportunities as students and the framework which upholds the University as an institute that we can be proud to be a part of.

We ARE the university. This fight is for the students AND the staff.

So let’s get involved! Attend teachouts, join the assemblies, and speak up!

This is our reminder that our voice matters and our actions can make a difference

Come and show your support at the student-staff assembly today at Hangar 5, Potterow 15:30-17:30 by @edisoulsoc
