Moving between the streets of Mexico City and journeys across the country, the book traces an intuitive and attentive way of looking at everyday life, where the familiar and the strange, the sacred and the profane coexist. Without fixed geography or chronology, the images unfold through wandering, encounters and free association.

“Most of Carolina’s photographs give me a sense of déjà vu. I feel as though I’ve been there, as though they belong to countless, endless nights that spill into dawn, when the body knows it should sleep but insists on going on, wandering after everything has closed, walking aimlessly.

Living in Mexico is in itself like browsing through a catalogue of disorienting, mind-boggling images and experiences. I have always thought that the films I admire most, such as David Lynch’s Inland Empire, do not lead you by the hand. They demand your participation as a viewer and leave open endings to be only interpreted through your own experience. The value of these photographs lies precisely there: they compel us to ask questions rather than provide answers.”

Join ICP on October 8 from 6:30–8 PM for the launch of Susan Meiselas’ (@susanmeiselas) new book, “NO KINGS: Signs of the Times,” published by Editorial RM (@editorial_rm) and distributed by D.A.P. (@artbook).⁠

Meiselas will be joined in conversation by book designer Yo Cuomo (@yolandacuomodesign) and contributors Laura Wexler (@laurawexler) and Eduardo Cadava to discuss the making of the book and its record of protest signs photographed in New York City and Washington, D.C., during Donald Trump’s second presidency.⁠

Bringing together documentary photography, graphic culture, and social history, “NO KINGS” looks at the handmade signs people carried to demonstrations and the ways humor, anger, and political concerns are expressed through visual language.⁠
