I’ve spent a good part of my life on the mats. First as a student, and eventually as a coach.

And if there’s one thing I’ve learned over the years, it’s that the people and the environment around you matter more than you sometimes realise.

One of the things I appreciate most about being at @combatuaejj is the trust they’ve placed in me.

Trust to coach, to share my ideas, to try things, to make mistakes, and to keep learning.

But it’s also the little things. Being listened to. Being supported. Feeling that the work you put in, even the things nobody really sees, matters to the people around you.

As coaches, we spend so much of our time looking after our students, helping them improve, worrying about their progress, and trying to do right by them.

Sometimes we forget how much it means to feel looked after, too.

Of course, not every day is perfect. There are long days, things that don’t go according to plan, and plenty of ordinary days in between.

But I get to come to work, do something I genuinely love, and be surrounded by people who trust me to do it.

And that’s something I don’t take for granted.

Thank you, @combat.uae 🤍 taken in Al khawaneej, Dubai by @edmanjiujitsu

I first met Hamad when he was just 13 years old. He’s 18 now.

One of the most rewarding parts of coaching is watching a kid who initially struggled with his fitness gradually become stronger, more confident, and more capable.

But even more than that, it’s watching him stay with the sport through the difficult days, the frustrations, and all the challenges that come with growing up.

I still remember one particularly exhausting training session. After everything we’d already done, I made the boys finish with 100 burpees.

Hamad was the only one who completed all 100. Not a single rep skipped.

It’s a small memory, but one I’ve never forgotten.

Over the years, I’ve watched Hamad become not only a better athlete, but also a really good teammate.

When people see athletes like Harib, Ammar, and Omar winning Youth World Championships, they see the ones standing on the podium.

What they don’t always see are the teammates who helped them prepare. The ones who showed up every day, pushed them in training, and helped make those performances possible.

Hamad has been one of those teammates.

And that’s something I really appreciate about him.

Five years later, he’s still here. 🤝 🤍 taken in Al khawaneej, Dubai by @edmanjiujitsu

Our Kids Jiu Jitsu classes might look a little different. And that’s intentional.

We want kids moving, playing, experimenting, making decisions and solving problems, not just memorising techniques.

Of course, we want them to become good at Jiu Jitsu.
But we also want them to become more confident, resilient, independent, and hopefully enjoy training enough to stay with it for years to come.

A look at the adult training environment we’re building at @combatuaejj

Different people come into the room with different experiences, goals and ways of learning.

We’ll teach. We’ll guide. We’ll give feedback.

But ultimately, the goal is for you to learn how to build your own Jiu Jitsu. taken in Al khawaneej, Dubai by @edmanjiujitsu

We all want young athletes to do well.

The challenge is creating an environment that gives them enough teaching, support and guidance but also enough space to eventually figure things out for themselves.

This is the kind of environment we’re building at @combatuaejj taken in Al khawaneej, Dubai by @edmanjiujitsu
