Giving back is so fulfilling.

This past weekend, I had the opportunity to volunteer at the @houstonfoodbank alongside alumni from 10 different HBCUs.

Together, we packaged over 1,300 stew bags to help families in need across our city.

There’s something powerful about stepping outside of your day-to-day and doing work that’s purely about service.

Getting back involved in community service reminded me how important it is to show up—for people you may never meet, but who will feel your presence through your actions.

I've noticed that when someone is rude, short-tempered, or disrespectful, it's usually not because they're having a great day. When I sense that, I'll often ask a simple question: "Hey, are you having a good day today?" The answer is rarely yes.

Psychologists call this emotional contagion, the tendency for emotions to spread from one person to another through our interactions. Research also shows that when people are under prolonged stress, the brain's threat-response system becomes more active, making them more reactive, impatient, and likely to lash out.

Over the years, I've learned that hurt people often hurt people. The pain, stress, frustration, or disappointment they're carrying internally eventually shows up externally in how they treat the people around them.

That doesn't excuse bad behavior, but it does create an opportunity for empathy.

Misery loves company. Negativity spreads. So does encouragement.

I've seen the wrong environment destroy productivity, confidence, and positive momentum. I've also seen one person with a positive attitude completely change the direction of a room.

Not everyone who crosses your path is fighting a visible battle. Sometimes the person giving you the hardest time is carrying the heaviest burden.

Be kind. Protect your energy. And don't let someone else's bad day become yours. by @edpartners
