It was 1986. Van Halen had a new singer. People had doubts.
Then the record came out. 5150 went to number one. The band had never had a number one album before. Not with Dave. Not ever.
I shot one of those early shows. Sammy sang hard. Eddie threw his head back and laughed. He played the Frankenstrat, a guitar he built himself from cheap parts and bicycle paint. He had a pack of Merits in his pocket. He always did.
They were not two men on a stage. They were one thing. You could feel it in the room. You can feel it in the frame.
Happy 79th birthday, Sammy. Thanks for that night.

Gene Simmons came to Nashville to take an award. Lifetime achievement, from the IEBA. He had earned it.
I did not know what to expect. You never do with the big ones.
He was easy in the room. He shook hands. He talked to everyone. Backstage he was funny, and he did not stop. A joke every minute. Some made you laugh. Some made you groan. Most did both.
I had a back hallway and one minute. That was all.
I thought the jokes would come with him to the camera. They did not. He stood. He looked at the lens. The man went away and the Demon came.
Fifty years he has worn that face. He does not need the paint anymore. #SongwriterMusician #GeneSimmons #KISS #MusicPhotography #BlackAndWhitePortrait taken in Nashville, Tennessee by @edrode

He was waiting at the bottom of the stairs at the old Melrose pool hall. One hand on the rail. A cigarette burning low by his pocket. The air was smoke and stale beer, the kind that gets into the walls and stays. He smiled like he knew a joke he wasn’t going to tell. I made the picture and it was a good one and I knew it.

Today is his birthday. He would have been 80.

The songs are still here. They will be here after all of us.

Calm before the storm on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. ☁️🔥

Just outside Moss Point, the marsh went perfectly still and the sky caught fire, with that rippled “mackerel sky” sailors have long read as a sign weather is coming. Hard to believe a hurricane is on the way when the evening looks like this.

Stay safe.

Early light on St. Francis Street. One last song before the weather turns. Built from railroad spikes, wrenches and old farm tools left over from the war, and he still looks ready to fly out ahead of the storm. Me too, buddy.

Such a pleasure meeting and photographing @stellalefty as we celebrated her #1 song “Boston,” now two weeks at the top of Billboard’s Country Airplay chart! 🎸
A real highlight was hearing a special performance of the song with fellow songwriter and producer Joe Reeves. Congratulations to everyone who had a hand in this one.
