Meet the Teaching Freedom panel.

On Nov. 5, Teaching Freedom brings together educators and leaders whose work spans higher education, K-12 education, literacy, educator development and community leadership.

Dr. Wayne W. Williams, Moderator
Professor of Accounting at Temple University’s Fox School of Business and an educator with more than three decades of experience. His work also extends into civic leadership, student mentorship and expanding opportunities for underrepresented students in business and higher education.

Dr. David E. Thomas, Panelist
An education and organizational leader whose work has crossed K-12, higher education and community engagement in Philadelphia. He is the founder of IHI Consultants and currently serves as the 2026-2027 Leader-in-Residence with YouthBuild Philadelphia.

Sharif El-Mekki, Panelist
Founder and CEO of the Center for Black Educator Development, an organization focused on strengthening and expanding the Black educator pipeline.

Kristin Green-Hayes, Panelist
A Philadelphia-born educator, literacy advocate and Reading Interventionist with more than 15 years of experience. His work centers culturally responsive education, literacy and creating stronger outcomes for Black and Brown students and families.

Together, they’ll join the conversation around Teaching Freedom during our Community Symposium.

We are thrilled to welcome back the One Philly Produce Project (OPPP) at Forrest Elementary for another incredible school year!

This marks our second year partnering with OPPP to provide free, fresh fruits and vegetables to families in our Extended Day, Extended Year (EDEY) and Community Schools programs. Access to healthy food is a cornerstone of student success, well-being, and thriving neighborhoods.

A special thank you to @educationphl and @aramark for their generous donation, which makes this continuous impact possible. Thanks to their support, our families can pick up fresh produce and essential groceries every other Friday at our outdoor farmers market! 🧺✨

Together with our community partners, we are proud to foster a healthy, supportive environment both inside and outside the classroom.

For Hispanic Heritage Month, we had the honor of welcoming Dr. Carrera to George Washington High School! She has been a great inspiration to so many Latinos and Latinas throughout her career as an educator and now serves as the Chief Education Officer for the Mayor’s Office.

A special shoutout to one of our ISA leaders, Natalia Brito, for conducting this interview and helping us highlight the stories and accomplishments of inspiring Latino leaders in our community.

Day at home ❌ Day at LEGACY ✅

Last Friday, while their teachers were having Professional Development Day, our Champions on the Rise students came to the LEGACY Center to spend the day playing tennis, dancing, singing and creating new and personalized drawstring bags! It was a day of fun out in the beautiful weather!

This joyful day of free tennis was made possible by the Mayor’s Office of Education’s Extended Day, Extended Year initiative!

☮️ A little creativity, a whole lot of peace! 🕊️

In honor of yesterday’s International Day of Peace, we’re taking a moment to celebrate our EDEY students and their beautiful Whirled Peace: Pinwheels for Peace! creations. 🌎💙
In collaboration with the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI), approximately 1,000 students across 10 participating EDEY schools put their creativity into action, designing pinwheels that reflect peace, community, and belonging.

Each pinwheel is a reminder that even the smallest acts of kindness, understanding, and unity can make a meaningful difference in our communities.
