Cathrine II or Sophia of Anhalt-Zerbst, was the Empress of Russia from 1762 to 1796. She became the ruler of Russia after overthrowing her husband Peter III, during which Enlightenment ideas inspired a renaissance of culture and science. During this time, new cities, universities, and theaters encouraged significant immigration from other European nations to Russia. Originally born in the Pormernia province of Prussia, she was a member of the Prussian nobility. Following the then-prevailing custom among the ruling dynasties of Germany, she received her education chiefly from a French governess and tutors. According to her memoirs, Sophie was regarded as a tomboy and trained herself to master a sword.

Like many royals of the era, Sophia was to be married off by her family to a greater noble, in the hopes of gaining fame and wealth. While her mother showed her around Europe it wouldn’t be until the Empress Elizabeth of Russia that a match was found. Becoming the guardian of the then 11-year-old Peter of Ulrich, Elizabeth saw a need to keep her dynastic heritage through her newly adopted nephew. Seeing a way to greater nobility in 1744, Sophia became immersed in Russian culture, the language, and finally the religion. This is where the name Cathrine stems from, in the Orthodox Christian faith.

In 1762, with Empress Elizabeth’s death, Peter became Peter III of Russia. He immediately reversed his aunt’s military and political advancements by quickly ending the war with Prussia. This made him an enemy to many of the senior nobles and officers of Russia. Catherine an ambitious woman, used the people’s dislike of Peter III’s foreign policy, religion, and origin (being a Prussian like herself). She then in the defense of Russian sovereignty declared herself with the backing of most of the military, clergy, and people of Russia, made herself Empress. Peter would eventually renounce his reign and later would be killed in a brawl at a pub (this was probably a covert assassination by Cathrine).

A 25-year-old Pakistani woman, Malala Yousafzai advocates for education across all genders and ages in nations that still deny girls and women the right. In early 2009, she wrote a blog under her pseudonym Gul Makai at age 11 for BBC Urdu. In it, she detailed her life under the Taliban occupation of the Swat District in Pakistan. The blog recorded Yousafzai's thoughts during the First Battle of Swat, as military operations took place, fewer girls show up to school, and finally, her school shut down. In Swat, the Pakistani Taliban had set an edict that no girls could attend school after 15 January 2009. They had already blown up more than 100 girls' schools.

The night before the ban took effect was filled with the noise of artillery fire, waking Yousafzai several times. The following day, she also read for the first time excerpts from her blog that were published in a local newspaper This made her a prominent figure against education bans, she interviewed both in person on television and in print. This led to her being nominated for the International Children’s Peace Prize and The world’s youngest Noble Peace Prize Laureate at 17.

On October 9th, 2012, the combined media attention and growing call for female education in Pakistan resulted in an assassination attempt against Yousafzai. The Tablian boarded her school bus, shooting her and two other girls. She survived the attempt, which actually increased the support of her work across the international stage. 50 Muslim clerics in Pakistan issued a fatwa against those who attempted to kill her. Following her recovery, she continued to push for education for girls and women worldwide. She used organizations like Right to Education and the Makla Fund to push these ideas. She would go on to co-author the famous novel “I Am Malala” in 2013 and was the subject of the Oscar-shortlisted documentary “He Named Me Malala” released in 2015. Both tracked her life story and struggled as a pro-education advocate in Pakistan. Time Magazine's 2013, 2014, and 2015 issues featured her as one of the most influential people globally for her work.
