HYROX PRO SOLO BORDEAUX

After a very tough summer health-wise combined with the extreme heat, I wasn’t expecting my first Hyrox Pro race to be ground-breaking, but having just peaked at my target paces last week I wasn’t expecting it to feel this difficult either.

I started strong, however the sleds took it right out of me. Some days I find them easy and some days hard. This time was hard! So I took the strategic decision to slow everything down but still felt like I was struggling my way through the whole course. Despite this, I came into the wall balls at 1h06, impressively only a few minutes behind my first Hyrox Open in Paris and not far off my target finish time of 1h10.

Yet like many others around me I hit a complete wall at the final station (wall balls), collecting over 20 no-reps and having to fight with myself not to give up every time I collapsed to the floor. I didn’t give up (thankfully) but spent 13 minutes (!!) at the gates of Hyrox hell.

Finish time 1h20. Not bad, but a huge room for improvement.

Escaping the heat and heading north to Britanny for the first time, to try to spend a few days enjoying ā€˜normal’ summertime weather.

The land of galettes, creĢ‚pes, cider, salt, breitz cola, more galettes, more creĢ‚pes, medieval castles, medieval villages, medieval souvenirs, sailing boats, bunting, really nice sweet pastries ā€˜Kouign-Amannā€˜, galettes and more creĢ‚pes.

A nice place really.

I’m a firm believer in the importance of visiting wineries and connecting people, place and purpose in order to truly understand a wine. Therefore I was delighted to finally visit @isoleolena, one of my favourite Chiantis, sat on the top of a hilled valley at the edge of the appellation and with a fantastic view out towards San Gimignano.

Thanks to Edoardo for the fantastic visit and tasting, which included the Chianti Classico 2023, the Syrah 2021 (I’m starting to really get into my Tuscan Syrahs, which you should definitely try if you haven’t yet…), the rare 2016 Gran Selezione (personal favourite) and the 2021 Cepparello (too young to appreciate at this stage).
I look forward to returning to visit their new winery and cellar, currently under construction.

The great thing about eating in Chianti is that the restaurants serve loads of local wines at a very small markup, which is fantastic when you want to end the day enjoying a bottle from the winery you have just been to with a delicious traditional meal without feeling ripped off. The fact that this isn’t the case for most of Bordeaux is just bewildering.

Our perfect evening meal was at @anticatrattorialatoppa in the heart of neighbouring San Donato with my Tuscan go-to pasta dish Pappardelle all’anatra (duck ragu) šŸ˜‹

At such great value, we even grabbed another bottle of Isole e Olena with our last meal in Florence at the absolutely incredible @atelierdenerli (and with another ragu). As they say in French, ā€˜on ne change pas une équipe qui gagne!’ Perhaps there’s an Italian equivalent?

The beautiful medieval Tuscan hilltop town of San Gimignano, famous for its 14 towers.

Turns out it’s impossible to get all of the towers in a single (portrait) photo without a helicopter, which I didn’t have to hand. So I had to try to capture them individually. Did I manage to collect them all?

No trip to Provence is complete without a stop by the beautiful villages of Saint-Rémy-de-Provence and Les Baux-de-Provence, both famous for being places of arts, crafts and sensorial expression, as well as being the region from where Vincent van Gogh gathered much of his artistic inspiration whilst spending a year in hospital.

I was certainly feeling inspired after a few glasses of rosé with lunch at @lamaisonfavier but fortunately not enough to end up in hospital.

We had a wonderful stay at the charming @domainedechalamon where we felt like we had the place to ourselves, enjoying a bottle of @domainedefontenille sparkling rosé by the poolside before heading to probably the best restaurant of our entire trip, @restaurant_l_oustalet_maianen (thanks to the @michelinguide) on their intimate but beautiful interior terrace. The photos online don’t do the place justice, but it cannot be missed if you’re in the region. The cheese chariot was a highlight, as well as the wine from @domainehauvette (I always always drink local when I travel).

Finally the Big Green Egg has hatched! 🐣

Most people told me cooking BBQs on the balcony of my central Bordeaux apartment would never be allowed. In any case I’m the only one who’s dared to do it, confidently reassured by my very limited legal research that appears to show no reason why I can’t have so much fun. Apparently the only thing people can complain about is the smell or smoke, so I’ve got to make sure I’m cooking deliciously smelling food and keeping the lid down on the egg.

I’ll obviously be posting videos of when the police eventually show up, and me bribing them away with a freshly-grilled brochette or a slice of homemade pizza.

Back from holidays in Provence and Tuscany, where I saw so many top-level restaurants using the Big Green Egg (and often INDOORS!) there was no better time to be feeling inspired for BBQ season.

83kg of solid ceramic in a single cardboard box to lift up two flights of stairs by myself in the middle of a heatwave made me thankful for all the recent Hyrox Pro training, but it was well worth it.

In true Bordeaux spirit, the first coĢ‚te de bœuf to be grilled was cooked to perfection (compliments to the chef, me) and was delicious was a bottle of @chateau_branecantenac 2014 (thanks to @gdetastes)

I already got a few thumbs up from people down in the street!

Expect much more enjoyment to come over the next few months. Sorry not sorry.

A fascinating visit to Roussillon en Provence learning about the use of quarried ocre as a natural pigment, and the region’s relationship with colour and expression in general. Needless to say the shoes needed a good clean afterwards!

There’s something so captivatingly beautiful about how the blue of the Mediterranean Sea meets the blue of the Mediterranean sky. Photos taken on board the boat back to the mainland from l’iĢ‚le de Porquerolles.
