What an amazing Ribbon Skirt workshop with the @usask @edwards_school #Indigenous business students 🤎. We shared stories & teachings, laughed, cried, and everyone left with gorgeous self-made skirts 🙏🏽 This is truly one of my most fave things to do, plus a bonus that I get to spend the time with a Métis bestie, @metis_spirit Amanda ♾️

We love seeing our alumni achieve extraordinary things!

Trevor Jacek (B.Comm. 2003) recently represented Canada at the 2026 World Masters Athletics Outdoor Championships in South Korea, where he and his teammates earned gold in the men's 4×400-metre relay. 🥇

A #USask Edwards graduate, chief financial officer, board volunteer, and world-class athlete, Jacek’s journey is a reminder that success can take many forms and that learning, leadership, and determination can open doors far beyond graduation.

Reflecting on the moment he stood atop the podium with his teammates as O Canada played, Jacek described it as “a 10-out-of-10 peak human experience.”

Please join us in congratulating Trevor in the comments below! 🎉

This September, in recognition of the National Day for Truth & Reconciliation, we're highlighting the books, films, podcasts, and learning experiences that faculty and staff at Edwards are engaging with to deepen understanding, foster reflection, and support ongoing learning.

Brooke Klassen, Acting Associate Dean, Academic and Associate Professor, shares her thoughts below! 💭

"Forged is a six-part CBC podcast hosted by Adrian Stimson, an artist from Siksika Nation in southern Alberta. The series investigates the massive fraud surrounding the work of renowned Anishinaabe artist Norval Morrisseau, who is known as the “Picasso of the North.” What begins as a mystery about the authenticity of a single painting develops into the story of one of the largest alleged art fraud schemes in the world. Through compelling investigative storytelling, Stimson examines not only the crime itself, but also what it reveals about how Indigenous art and culture are valued in Canada and around the world.

The podcast highlights the connection between reconciliation and economic justice by showing how the exploitation of Indigenous art can deprive Indigenous artists, families, and communities of recognition and economic benefit. I appreciated how the story connected to topics including cultural appropriation, authenticity, ownership, and the responsibility of institutions and individuals to protect Indigenous cultural artifacts and intellectual property.

I recommend Forged because it moves beyond historical discussions of reconciliation and focuses on contemporary Indigenous issues. It examines who gets to tell Indigenous stories, how Indigenous artists and knowledge holders are valued in society, and what meaningful reconciliation looks like in economic and cultural spaces. By exploring these matters through a true-crime narrative, Forged is both accessible and thought-provoking, offering listeners a deeper understanding of Indigenous perspectives and the ongoing work of reconciliation."

"Participating in the KAIROS Blanket Exercise alongside the MPAcc Year 1 students this year was an impactful learning experience. While I had prior knowledge of many aspects of Indigenous history in Canada, this exercise presented that history in a much more tangible and personal way.

At the beginning of the exercise, we stood together on blankets that represented the land. We were each assigned roles and asked to protect our land. As the exercise progressed, blankets were folded smaller or taken away entirely to represent the loss of Indigenous lands through treaties and government policies. Physically watching the amount of land become smaller and seeing participants displaced from the blankets made history feel much more real than a typical slide show presentation. As a mother, what I found particularly impactful was when the mothers in the exercise watched their babies die from illness or had them taken away.

A big thank you to Cort Dogniez for his facilitation of this exercise which created such a powerful visual representation of loss, reinforcing the value of experiential learning."

The Cosmic Dome Experience at Dakota Dunes Resort offers visitors a unique opportunity to step inside an 8-metre geodesic dome and embark on an immersive journey through the night sky. Combining state-of-the-art projection technology with rich Indigenous storytelling, the experience brings together astronomy, culture, and tradition in a captivating and educational way.

Central to the presentation are the traditional star knowledge and creation teachings of the Lakota, Dakota, and Nakota Nations. In these teachings, the Sun is known as “Wi” and the Moon as “Hanwi”. Long ago, they were believed to be a loving husband and wife who traveled side by side across the sky, bringing light to both the worlds above and below. Their story helps explain the phases of the moon and the rare event of a solar eclipse.

I highly recommend the Cosmic Dome Experience for anyone interested in astronomy, the solar system, or constellations who would also like to explore Indigenous perspectives and storytelling. It is an excellent opportunity for families, students, and visitors of all ages to engage with Indigenous knowledge in an accessible and memorable format. The immersive environment makes complex stories and astronomical concepts easier to understand than traditional books or films, particularly for younger audiences.

One of the highlights of the experience was viewing stunning NASA imagery and projections of constellations, planets, galaxies, and nebulae displayed across the dome’s interior. The combination of scientific exploration and Indigenous cultural teachings creates a powerful and unforgettable experience that celebrates both the beauty of the universe and the rich traditions that help us understand our place within it.

Book: From the Ashes by Jesse Thistle

"Great books help us to learn something, feel something, and hopefully share that experience with others.

Jesse Thistle's memoir "From the Ashes" takes you on a journey of a Metis-Cree boy, who deals with the ground-shifting changes of early parent abandonment, the foster care system, and life far away with his grandparents. He tells the story of his struggles that lead to a heartbreaking cycle of addiction, trauma and homelessness, which consume much of his youth.

But, this is truly a story of survival, hope and resilience in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles. Through incredible strength, love, support and education, he finds his path back to his Indigenous roots and, ultimately, his happiness.

Jesse's storytelling style is captivating, capped off with his poetic interludes interspersed throughout the text. This is an inspirational memoir well worth reading."
