Francis Blane’s New Series of Work, Dark, with an essay by Anna McNay

The new work includes this book. It is beautifully produced, and the essay runs along alternate pages which are illustrated by incidental details of Blane’s studio – the floor with its gorgeous spillage of colour; a translucent plastic bowl in which is mixed gesso, paint tubes emerging from dark corners already squeezed out of shape and smeared with their own contents, rather as if they are the scattered bodies of some horrible disaster.
The essay pays attention to the details of the pictures and calls upon the divided self as an explanation of why the paintings are revelatory rather than merely illustrative. McNay cites her own dealings with addiction and therapy to focus in upon the nature of confrontation – that between the outer and the inner life. It is well wrought and correctly, in my opinion, characterizes the expressive possibilities Blane exploits in her painting.
The drawings follow, before we move on to the paintings that extend the process into the visceral realm.
The paintings are presented on high quality plates, the recto pages with the full image scaled down, the verso with a ‘life-sized’ print of a detail. That is a lovely way of getting as close to the surface as you can in a reproduction. It gives a sense of the perceptual nature of the surface that recedes when looking at the painting as a whole, where the imagination is required to see the pictorial space and to grasp the implications of that imaginative space for the interior world it illuminates.
It is a very beautiful book by @edwinters38
