handmade & hand painted pottery by @erinecurtis :)

A crazy win this week. One I desperately needed but was not at all expecting. I threw, trimmed, and speed-dried these pots until 5 am Tuesday morning with intention of firing them only a few hours later. An insane gamble— a process like this is essentially destined for failure: cracking, warping, exploding. Clay is not something that responds well to rushing or pushing past limits. Sometimes, though, pushing limits is entirely worth the risk. I’m so glad I took that risk. Can’t wait to Raku these this weekend 🥹 by @eecpottery

My heart is exploding today. It has been a strange year (when has it not?!) navigating persistent health issues, managing complicated grief, helplessly watching the entire world collapse again and again, and realizing just how uninspiring my life outside of ceramics felt (this is your warning to forgo getting a PhD, in case you’ve considered it). There are so many moments this past year where I’ve wondered if I had any community, whether I’m making dumb choices that result in vicious cycles of dissatisfaction, whether or not this is even something I should spend my time doing.
Ceramics has been such a gift to me, not just for the joy in making my random ideas come to life through my hands, but also for its faultless demonstration of how good life is and the incredible people I am consistently surrounded by. It took a whole village to help me w/ my first market this weekend: friends taking photos to share my work, friends setting up my table and breathing in concerning amounts of dust while arranging (and rearranging) the moss 86 times, friends drilling my chicken clocks at 4 in the morning the night before because I STILL made the holes too fucking small, friends bringing food because we all know that’s something I failed to consider, and friends just showing up. Just being there. I am always so awestruck by the people I get to have in my life, and even more so by the fact that I am privileged enough to be loved by them for no good reason at all. While this weekend market was such a small thing, it was everything and more to me for the sake of the people I got to be around, the artwork from my community I got to witness, and the shared joy of connecting with others over this silly little thing I do in my free time.
To my friends, it is my greatest honor in this life to know you. To all who came and supported my work, I am so grateful that you are connected to me through my favorite thing in the world to do! Thank you, thank you, thank you. ♥️

Giving this chess set another moment as I reflect on this year in ceramics. While there were so many projects I adored making and thinking up, this was the one project all year that I walked away saying: “wow! I actually did that! And it all turned out!”
Of course, in any craft, there’s a fair share of woes or moments where your work doesn’t come out exactly how you hoped or imagined it would. Especially in certain firings, where the environment is far less controlled (like a wood firing, for example), a lot can go “wrong” or differently than you had hoped or expected. This project exceeded all possible expectation I had and was such a special gift to give to my brother for a lifetime of chosen friendship. I’m so grateful for this last year in pottery. It’s taught me so much and lately I feel like I’m moving in a direction that has been particularly inspiring and true to my abilities and heart for the craft. More and more and more to come! Anyone down for a game of chess? ♟️ by @eecpottery

It’s been a minute. I’ve been sorely uninspired and intermittently indisposed these past few weeks, so the motivation to start new projects has been at an all time low. This is usually a sign for me to take a step back and observe instead of do. One of the ways I’ve been able to do this lately has been teaching my semester courses (!!) which has not only been just the biggest joy in the world, but it has forced me to think more technically about the craft in ways I increasingly take for granted: What are my hands doing? Where am I in space? Where is my mind right now? When I am particularly preoccupied with the trammels and snags of everyday life, I find that I need this practice more than ever (and I’ll avoid it then the most, somehow).
Despite spending so much time at the studio teaching, I was still feeling in a rut until very very recently— I had the incredible luck of being able to sit and watch some cows for several hours many times this fall, as well as to see Acadia and the mountains in peak foliage (last couple slides). I could not get the horns and the face of the bull I saw out of my head a couple weeks ago—The texture, the sheen, the fluid curves. The shadow on his nose. I am not a sculptor by any means—and the frustration of my attempts served only to prove that— but it was really cool to produce something so delicate and anatomical and test my capacity for symmetry and scale using porcelain in a hollow form. And, of course, I had to make another mountain mug. I can’t wait to fire these. It’s nice to be excited about something :) by @eecpottery

Today felt like Christmas morning over and over and over again (32 times to be exact… and then some!) What a special project this was, made even more special by the volatility and physical toil of the wood firing process (splitting the wood was easily the best part for me). Months of work sheepishly handed over to the will of the flame. This summer has been full of joys that have felt nothing short of magic, and the alchemy of this process was a befitting way to bid the season farewell. :)

Pictured is a handmade ceramic chess set (wheel thrown and handbuilt) fired to cone 10 over the course of approximately 48 hours in a traditional wood kiln. The variability in the pieces is dependent upon their location in the kiln as well as other factors, like spontaneous sprays of wood ash/wood combustion, temperature variations, and flame movement. To get to learn more about this process and have a hand in its execution was all I could ask for and more. I hope you enjoy the results as much as I do!! :) P.S. — no, we didn’t measure these (we just eyeballed them), so they vary a wee bit in height! And no, I will never measure anything til the day I die 😎 by @eecpottery

And that’s a wrap. I can’t believe I stayed at the studio until 5 in the morning this morning and now I’m at work (I swore I’d stop doing that). I also can’t believe I threw, trimmed, and finished eight pieces for Raku in one night for this Friday (thank god for hair dryers). I feel like I’ve been dragging my feet in every realm lately and this process was an adumbration of that. While I can’t ensure that all my efforts won’t be in vain, I can ensure I will never be doing this dumb shit again. The process is long for a reason. My fate belongs to the kiln gods now.
Aside from being the most expensive endeavor ever, I’m grateful for Raku already reminding me to slow down, to acknowledge the process and order of things, and to lean into my way of being, even if the outcome is not what I hope or expect.
I threw everything I had at this. There was no question I’d get it done. I always do. Next time I just hope it isn’t at my own expense 😵‍💫🫨 by @eecpottery
