As Fragile as our existence in spider webs cast last spring
Beneath the boughs
Black snakes lay
Curled together
Gathered in moss
In mist
Rain falls
Aș do I
I attempt to gather the essence of my own sentience in this place
In the swoop of a matriarchal owl
In the croak of a crows beak
In swollen Cranberry creek
A sudden flash of light
A crash of night
And darkness comes
The brave take the spade
They wander the stolen streets
Remembering
My people
My humans with human bones
Human blood
Human tones
We bleed
Water grief and stones
In the distance
Fools dig a well in a wetland
The water
Is not for the bees
It is for the thieves

where spring is constant
where my heart is moved
by the sound of your breathing
by the sounds of a soft wind receding

THE TURMOIL BEGINS
Popocatépetl, Mexico

Currently, most glaciers of the world are retreating as a result of global heating.

Scientists from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) officially declared Popocatépetl’s glaciers extinct in early 2001.

The small-size tropical glaciers of Popocatépetl volcano (Mexico) were unique, representing the only ice masses and natural “gauges” to study global warming at around 20° north latitude.

The beginning of darkness
Beyond my view it transcends
Pitching into blackness
Beneath
The turmoil begins
The space awakens into scapes and bluffs
Recessing cerulean
Acquainting itself with shadow
With the horizon draped in warmth
Here I remain
We remain
Til yesterday touches today
The plumeria sits
Unfolding to the sun

APOGEE AND APATHY
Mount Spurr Ice Cauldron, Alaska

While climate heating is causing widespread regional glacier retreat across Alaska where rising summer temps and heat waves dramatically extend the melt season, the glacier melting on Mount Spurr also includes volcanic and geothermal activity.

The vent last erupted in ’92 and ’53, sending ash 65,000 feet into the air. Another eruption could produce hot gas, rock, and ash traveling over 200 mph, melting the snow and ice and triggering mudflows called lahars.

Between apogee and apathy
We glide
In glacial till
In circles of salt and silt
In the Mojave
Into a sort of trace being
Everything melts
A monolith of nuage rises from scattered ridges
From scoria
It yearns for sky
How do we know where shadow ends and day begins
Only the gods know
And that old man with the cigar
He knows something
Something about the lodestone below
We sit in servitude
Congregated in snowpacks
Smoking dried leaves
Struggling to sustain the cisterns
Bleeding
Water
