The weather was on our side yesterday for our Phytogram Workshop, led by KJ Edwards! This daylong workshop, prioritizing 2-Spirit and Indigiqueer participants, led folks through the process of collecting and soaking plant material in an eco-friendly developer, placing them onto film, editing, and finally projecting their new works on a 16mm projector.

Special thanks to @talkingstickfst for co-presenting this workshop with us and to @xin3ma for loaning us the equipment. 🙏🙏🙏

Join SUM gallery on Sep 27 for a FREE cameraless Phytogram Workshop, facilitated by KJ Edwards (Kanien'kehá:ka, mixed-settler interdisciplinary artist). 🌱 Priority will be given to Two-Spirit and Indigiqueer Artists. 🎞️

Phytograms, first coined by artist Karel Doing, are made by soaking plant material in an eco-friendly developer and placing them directly onto the film, creating imprints of the plants within the emulsion. This workshop will teach participants how to mix their developer, apply their chosen plants onto 16mm and 35mm B&W film stock. Participants will learn how to fix and splice 16mm film for projection, as well as how to use and load a 16mm projector, demonstrated by KJ. 📽️

This workshop does not require camera experience or analogue film experience!

As we approach the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we acknowledge and reflect on the parts of our history that may be hard to sit with, and we stand with generations of First Nations, Inuit, and Metis Survivors who have long carried the weight of Canada’s checkered past.

We have asked three of our Indigenous artist members to share a video for our screening on Wednesday, September 30th, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. We’ll also be featuring a fourth film by Mike McKay and his collaborator Gilbert Whiteduck: Chief of the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg community from June 2008 to April 2015. They will play in the DARC Microcinema from 10:00am - 5:00pm. Swipe to learn about the films or visit the link in our bio for more information.

Truth and Reconciliation calls upon all Canadians to recognize the outdated and deeply oppressive systems and ways of thinking that led to the construction of residential schools in the first place. We must acknowledge that we do not yet live in a society based in mutual respect and understanding, and that we live in a manner that is profoundly disrespectful to the environment, the land, to Indigenous Peoples, and to the idea of true equality.

We must recognize that there is still work to be done, and reparations to be made. We are not simply moving forwards towards a brighter future but moving away from a horrific and systemic past and present of cultural genocide and mass oppression of Indigenous Peoples. Let’s all do what we can by learning, listening, and showing up.

Here in Ottawa, on the traditional, unceded and unsurrendered territory of the Algonquin Anishnabeg people, DARC will continue to operate with respect, humility, and a commitment to truth and reconciliation by honouring the rights, strength, and beauty of the Indigenous Peoples.

We’re just a day away from our shorts program, 𝗦𝗸á𝘁𝗻𝗲 (𝗔𝗹𝗹 𝗧𝗼𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿): 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝗲𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗙𝗶𝗹𝗺𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗧𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗜𝘀𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗕𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱, curated by QAF’s own 𝗞𝗝 𝗘𝗱𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀.
