ME + MY V-FLAT — Ep 002 📸⬛️⬜️

Overcast light is soft and flattering, but it can also make everything feel a little too even… like your subject and the background are blending together.

So in this shoot, we used the BLACK side (negative fill) to subtract light and bring the face back to life:

What negative fill did here:
✔️Deepened the shadow side for more dimension
✔️Added contrast without needing harsher light
✔️Separated the subject from a bright background

Soft light is great.
Soft light + negative fill is 🔥.

Save this for the next time your “studio” is literally outside.

I recently had the opportunity to photograph and create a video highlighting the Virgin Islands Men’s National Basketball Team before they departed for Lima, Peru, to compete in the @fisu America Games Lima 2026. 🇻🇮🏀

This is how you build a studio anywhere. ⬛️⬛️

In this setup, @efexphotography used two V-Flats on the sides to control spill and shape the light, while a bare bulb lit the scene and foam core boards extend the booth to create a clean portrait environment.

Three V-Flats. One clean portrait. 😮‍💨📸
@efexphotography built this look with a simple 3-V-Flat formula:
V-Flat #1 = backdrop (clean separation)
V-Flat #2 = fill (softens shadows and add catch light in the eyes)
V-Flat #3 = negative fill (adds shape + drama)
