✨ september wrap-up ✨ september you reminded me of where my heart is. you reminded me that love needs to be nurtured and cared for. you reminded me to slow down, to take a deep breath, to accept kindness and generosity. thank you for that. i was more intentional about my reading time this month but it still wasn’t enough to finish all the books on my hopefuls list. but i tried my best! hahaha the highlight was being able to beta read “the codex circle” by @cardigansandclassics. i am in awe at how effortless you make this writing thing look, emma! i obviously drank way too much coffee in september, i listened to mostly sad music, and bought a couple new sweaters in anticipation for those crisp autumn mornings. cried at the jensen mcrae concert when she held my heart in her words. in my august wrap up i was absolutely mortified to realize i didn’t share any wisdom or wit from the one and only elisa (@yeahimreading) so she gets a whole goddamn slide dedicated to her wonder. i love you. september meant seeing friends for lunches in noisy food courts and dinners in cozy restaurants, and yap sessions on my couch. it meant being reminded that despite the way this lonely world works, i am not actually alone. i used all this self-reflection to jump back to one of my first manuscripts, the bea side. because if there’s someone to understand my loneliness and yearning for connection, it would be bea. i’m so happy to be back with her. welcome sweet october, i’m so glad to be around for what you have in store ✨ by @effiereads

✨ my week of reading ✨ 𝐪𝐨𝐭𝐝: what are you planning on reading this week? i am in awe of @cardigansandclassics’ mind!!!! we love a holiday monday so i can do nothing but read all day 😌 just a cheeky listen on my commute to and from work. peep my afternoon flat white 🤤 my train home got delayed so i was able to burn through a good chunk of bunny 🐰 any time i have even a fraction of sit down time, im picking up the codex circle. my friends are so talented omgggg bunny continues to weird me out! hahaha wee little reading day. work got the better of me 😮‍💨 i made vegan dumplings for the first time this weekend and i burned through the last bit of bunny. WILD TIME. dumplings were 10/10. by @effiereads

end of august ✨✨✨ for me, this month was filled with some high highs and some low lows which is just so typical of august. i barely had the time/concentration to read but i logged a couple of queer romances that got me out of my head. i cannot stop thinking about from beijing, with love and feel inspired to watch and read about love over and over bc it was so beautiful. the vampire lestat continues to dominate my listening hours with a brief interlude by troye sivan’s new single bc WOMEN. i also love da movies! you will catch me in a theatre always! i got to see hilary duff again this year, which was absolutely magical. one could even say it’s what dreams are made of… in mid-august, cass (@folkloreandfiction) came to visit! it’s always nice to recharge the shared brain cell and be able to devil our minion in person. we had a phenomenal weekend with emma (@cardigansandclassics) and mariko (@abitbetterbooks) exploring all the sights that hamilton, ontario has to offer – more on that later! 😈 in august, i drank more coffee than is probably good for me, the self-imposed deadline to finish my edits for nevergreen house looming over my head. with the start of september i’ll begin querying my manuscript out again, so please send all the positive, lucky vibes in the world that agents will sign on when they meet simon and the gang! even more so, i hope y’all will want to too when i share them with you in the coming days 🥰 so here’s to the end of august, to the warm sun that coats its days and the existential dread that fills its nights. you are a wonder in your complexity. and to the beginning of my favourite season, i’m ready for you september. ✨ /late august angst, and a pointless night and the feeling of being alive for the first time, in a long time/ 🍂 by @effiereads

✨ first lines of books on my tbr ✨ here’s a handful of beginnings from books that have been patiently waiting on my tbr. i’m already so intrigued by these first lines. the first line of a novel is always so interesting to me. sometimes it gives it all away right at the start, sometimes it’s something that doesn’t make sense until i’ve read the very last page, and sometimes it’s something so ridiculous i just need to keep reading. ✨ 𝐪𝐨𝐭𝐝: what’s on your tbr right now? by @effiereads

“he was suddenly aware of the passage of time, each second like a fallen grain of sand in the hourglass…forty-eight hours. stealing a glance at daniel, that number felt precious and way too small.” – from beijing, with love, bei lin ✨✨✨ [insert lilyrosedeppnosferatumeme.jpg] omggggggg this was so fucking ROMANTIC. the vibes were romantic, the characters were romantic, the prose was romantic!! the premise of falling for someone within 2 weeks is the kind of absurdity we look for in romance. but as the days passed between yang and daniel, their coming together felt effortless and each next step felt like the only way forward. daniel feeling undeserving and untethered as he tries not to let his racing mind take over; yang feeling wary of his attraction, wary of how easy things are with daniel…until they can’t deny it. the want was there but neither felt brave enough to do anything about it — the ticking clock on their time together looming always. aside from the romance, my favourite parts throughout the book were the conversations and self-reflections each character had about their conservative chinese heritage/culture conflicting with their queerness and their progressiveness. it was so compelling, so honest. i loved how beijing was in itself a character of its own and how the energy of the city was palpable. the sign of good side characters is that you can envision a life outside of the main character’s bullshit. and poppy was just that. poppy wasn’t /just/ there to listen to daniel whine about how hot yang was (bc wow was he hot) but she had a full, complicated personhood that stood on its own & i loved her so much. i just wanted to hug all three of them so bad. cried my face off at the end. ✨ IF YOU LIKE…the ‘before’ trilogy, 2000’s romance movie plots, great complex OCD rep, yearning that feels like the fire of a billion suns, darius the great is not okay, friendships being as important as the romance LISTEN TO…beijing - patrick watson; will i see you again - thee sacred souls; no ordinary love - sade; coming up roses - harry styles; without you, without them - boygenius ✨ thank you to @alcovepress for the e-arc, can’t wait to get a hard copy! by @effiereads
