This week is National Invasive Species Awareness Week!

Invasive species are pesky plants, animals, and fungi that can unbalance natural systems and outcompete native species.

The Effigy Mounds natural resources team works hard to control invasive species such as garlic mustard, multiflora rose, buckthorn, and many others.

Visitors can help prevent the spread too by cleaning mud and plant material from hiking boots, gear, bike tires, and watercraft before use in or around the park. Help keep our natural areas safe!

Due to the lapse in government funding, the hiking challenge guided hikes on October 25-26 are cancelled. This includes Hanging Rock and Sny Magill on Saturday and the Heritage Addition and Marching Bears on Sunday. by @effigymoundsnm

Reminder! Join us tonight at 6pm to learn about using Remote Sensing to Investigate Linear Mounds in Northeast Iowa.

Dr. Colin Betts, Professor at Luther College will discuss the results of using multi-instrument geophysical survey to investigate linear mounds. The project involved the collection of magnetic, resistance, and ground penetrating radar data.

Join a park ranger for a sunrise hike to the Fire Point overlook in the North Unit on that day. Participants will be able to watch the sunrise over the Fire Point overlook. Meet the ranger in front of the Visitor Center at 5 am.

Past, Present, & Future

The history and heritage of Native Americans, Native Alaskans, Native Hawaiians, and Island communities are part of all national parks today. Throughout the year, and especially during #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth during November, we celebrate the rich traditions, languages, and contributions of Indigenous people.

People have lived in the area that is now Effigy Mounds National Monument for time immemorial. Their cultures are forever part of the landscape in the forms of the mounds they built. The living descendants of the people who built the mounds, and other tribal nations who maintain strong cultural ties to the area, survived displacement and still engage with the mounds for ceremony, reflection, and remembrance of their ancestors.

Today, Effigy Mounds National Monument works closely with Tribal Nations to determine the best practices in managing the park to preserve and protect the mounds.

The Yellow River Boardwalk is now open for hiking! The flood waters have receded enough to allow our maintenance crew to clean and repair the boardwalk. We are grateful for the flood waters to go down and we are grateful for the replenishment of nutrients and moisture as well.

Happy National Travel & Tourism Week!

When making your Iowa travel plans for the summer, we hope that a visit to Effigy Mounds National Monument makes it on the itinerary.

Today's theme is Outdoor Exploration. With 2,526 acres in the park, there are plenty of opportunities to explore! Hike along the trails and see some of the 206 preserved Native American burial mounds in our North and South units. Or search for different species of birds and plants along the Yellow River Boardwalk trail.

The park is open from dawn to dusk, and the visitor center is open 9:00 am - 4:30 pm.
